Does anyone miss Debenhams/BHS?

I had a catch up with a friend earlier who said she misses Debenhams a lot and misses the staples she’d buy from BHS. I forgot until just today that they ever existed Confused. My local town centre never had a Debenhams or BHS so maybe that’s why!

Does anyone else miss them?

Absolutely miss Debenhams, no real department store in our town now and online shopping is mind numbing

BobbieT1999 · 23/11/2021 23:31

Yes, always good for finding those things you couldn't find anywhere else!

I loved a trip to Debenhams in its heyday, but in more recent years the store looked tatty. I used to buy fair bit of clothing but last time went it was uninspiring and I find it annoying having to hunt down say jeans from various ranges/parts of a big store. It had good lingerie section & I always did well for sale rack bargains so I will miss that as online bra shopping is an expensive hassle.

I miss Debenhams, it was the heart of the town. Actually I miss Staples too. Office world isn't the same.

I miss browsing at my local Debenhams on a Saturday afternoon & having coffee in the cafe. I know it's online now but I do miss mooching around a department store. There's not many department stores left near me now just M&S, Fenwick and Harrods.

Don’t miss Debenhams…in my city it was always the underdog to House of Fraser and John Lewis…was always a bit scrappy in comparison. BHS though…as a child I loved it…mainly for the cafe which was a massive treat to a 7 year old girl in the 1980s. I remember wandering around the lighting department as a novelty and agree with the PP who said they were good to mooch around at Christmas. I stopped shopping there in the 90s though…as an awkward teen it was too old lady and by that time it was well past it’s heyday. It’s a shame but I do remember it fondly, getting a cuppa and a slice of cake on a rainy Saturday afternoon with my lovely DM.

The big loss (and maybe only relevant to those in central belt Scotland) was the day that Goldbergs closed its doors. Now THERE is a a department store that I mourn the loss of!

I will definitely miss Debenhams when I get back to the UK next year (hopefully!) - I always used to buy a selection of nice shirts for DH from there when we came over, as he liked them. He was also a big fan of Rocha John Rocha, and I was quite sad when we were last over (Easter 2019) that RJR had already gone from Debenhams.

It will seem odd not having Debenhams to go to when we come back - it's always been part of the holiday experience!

Draggondragon · 24/11/2021 05:29

We still have both in Qatar! BHS have immense sales with Portmerion and Wedgewood reduced by about 80%

noenergy · 24/11/2021 05:40

@Draggondragon I'm so jealous especially of the BHS

Eatingsoupwithafork · 24/11/2021 05:57

I miss Debenhams and House of Fraser. Could easily spend half a day on a Saturday in just those two shops.

Andoffwego · 24/11/2021 06:02

I miss Debenhams as it was until the early 2000s. After that it got really tatty and not great, although some of the really big stores were still very good.

I don’t miss BHS at all. It was always pure frump. I seem to remember it had some ok homeware but it was never a go to shop.

Andoffwego · 24/11/2021 06:05

And I’m still incredulous that Woolworths is gone from the highstreet. It’s WOOLWORTHS FFS! You nearly always found what you went in for, and I grieve their giant pick & mix selections.

PaulaTrilloe · 24/11/2021 06:07

I lamented the demise of BHS when looking for new lights.

Didn't rate Debenhams, miss Woolworths.

C&A were a Dutch company that we called "Coats & 'Ats"

MrsLargeEmbodied · 24/11/2021 06:08

i miss BHS

MrsLargeEmbodied · 24/11/2021 06:10

top shop/top man i miss for my dc

Oblomov21 · 24/11/2021 06:10

I miss Debenhams. I would have bought clothes there recently if it'd been open. Dh and I went shopping and I saw it in the corner of the shopping centre and I felt sad.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/11/2021 06:10

I miss BHS, I used to shop there regularly. Debenhams not so much because a) always overheated b) they had gone downhill so I'd gone in less ans less.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 24/11/2021 06:12

agree with BHS at christmas time for the gift section

MrsSchadenfreude · 24/11/2021 06:13

I miss the home and lighting departments at BHS. Also their long bodied swimsuits! Debenhams was good for browsing, and I usually ended up buying something.

nocnoc · 24/11/2021 06:15

I really miss Debenhams. I went to John Lewis yesterday and the clothes are all up market and expensive. In Debs you could nab a bargain and prices were ok. I don’t want to spend £80 on a tshirt!

Mantlemoose · 24/11/2021 06:31

Absolutely to both and Laura Ashley. Our local shopping centre is missing all these now - no point going there now

Megan2018 · 24/11/2021 06:36

I liked BHS towels, but don’t miss either store.
