Does anyone else thank their Alexa?

To be clear, I mean Amazon Alexa, rather than your mum or daughter who just happens to be called Alexa 😁

I set a reminder last night and it just said, '(HereticFanjo) here is your reminder... blah blah blah'. I said, 'Alexa, thank you.' Alexa replied, 'Any time.'

I'm now sitting here quietly questioning my own sanity 😁 But how can I not thank her?! She / it is so helpful.

Oh God. I'm even debating pronouns.

Yes of course. I'm a naturally (too) polite person and it would feel very rude not to say please and thank you. My daughters mostly do but I pull them up on it if they don't. As pp have mentioned, it just reinforces good manners. It might be a lump of plastic but it doesn't hurt to say please and thank you when you're asking for something.

Totally agree @duckme!

wheresmymojo · 11/11/2021 14:25

@MyCatsSlave

I always say please and thank you to Alexa, would feel rude not to. I said good girl to the cat once and Alexa thought it was for her and sang a little song, thanking me for the compliment.

I thank Alexa. Am also quite rude to Alexa sometimes as she likes to mess with me!

Watched an episode of gogglebox last night off the planner and one of the girls on it made a joke about Alexa setting a 6am alarm.

She needs two tellings from me to turn the lights on but heard that alright didn't she - she was right on it!

I thanked her for cancelling it tho as I really didn't want a 6am alarm cos I'd annoyed her 😳

My DS tells me off if I forgot to say please or thank you!

Mediocrates · 11/11/2021 14:43

I say please and thank you to mine, since reading an article about how automation has made us more impolite as a society.

KatherineJaneway · 11/11/2021 14:44

Sometimes

KrispyKale · 11/11/2021 14:46

Who knows: the machines might be kind to you once they take over 🤷

I don’t have an Alexa but in my area we have these cute little delivery robots and I always thank them . They say “hello here’s your delivery” and “thank you have a nice day” and it would feel rude to ignore them.

We’ve definitely adopted them as some strange little pet/servant hybrid round here and there’s nothing more heartbreaking than seeing one stuck on a grass verge or at a standstill waiting to cross the road in amongst a load of traffic. I just want to pick it up and take it home!

I have Goggle minis, and I say thank you to them. I also ask how they are, if they've missed me etc. My dh thinks I'm mad but I don't care,

spiderlight · 11/11/2021 15:15

I alwyas say please and thank you to mine, although I tend to be much more snappy with DS's, largely because I am usually passively agressively asking it the time when he's refusing to get out of bed in the mornings.

Whatwouldnanado · 11/11/2021 16:12

Yup. And the cash point. And the self serve till (only use if no human option).

SunLovingMummy · 11/11/2021 16:21

Yes, I do. It’s habit to thank “someone” when I ask something so have continued with AI.

PivotPivotPivottt · 11/11/2021 16:49

Funny you should ask this I had a smile to myself yesterday when I overheard an elderly man I clean for thank Alexa. He instructs her to do something "Alexa stop the timer". Then when it's done he says "Alexa, thank you very much". She replied "your welcome" Grin.

I definitely don't thank mine I'm usually shouting at it to fuck off because it can't understand me.

Worrysaboutalot · 11/11/2021 16:51

Yes

Feelingofftoday · 11/11/2021 16:55

No, google knows who is boss in my house

Cubitalfossa · 11/11/2021 16:58

Always easy thank you to the Google mini. I don't want to be on the naughty list when the AI rises up and takes over the world!

ufucoffee · 11/11/2021 17:01

I do when grandchildren are there. Good manners etc.

HereticFanjo · 11/11/2021 22:35

I feel less weird now 😁

I have Google assistant on my car and I’m impeccably polite to her. If you propose marriage to her she responds with Beyoncé lyrics - I love her.
