Why / how does my TV turn itself on randomly and very occasionally

It’s 1:16am and I’ve just been woken up by the sound of the tv

Go downstairs and the one remote control is sat next to tv where it was left.
The tv was not on yesterday evening.

There is no pets indoors and no children are awake or able to get downstairs.

What could do this?

We’ve had the tv 5 years but its only turned itself on at random times about 6 times so far over the last few months

Sometimes it’s the middle of the night and the sound wakes me up, other times it’s when I’ve been out in the day and I come hone to the tv on when it hadn’t been switched on that day before I leave

It’s not a woo thing because there would be no sense in that

The tv otherwise functions fine, the remote is fine and has had its batteries replaced

Oh that’s worrying. I didn’t think it could be. All the sockets are difficult to get to as it’s all built in confused.

It's really not that dangerous. Obviously there is risk there that doesn't exist if you unplug it. But the vast majority of people don't and TVs are not a major culprit when it comes to house fires.

I have this problem, it only happens if theres been a power surge or short outage, then I hear ghostly voices from the tv in the bedroom !

It's the girl from the Ring trying to get through!

Doubt this will help you but mine did that last night and scared us shitless. It was the robo vac running over the remote which had fallen on the floor.

There’s also nothing on my tv to “turn it off properly” the only option would be to unplug, which would mean the software updates wouldn’t happen. It’s literally been designed to stay on so I very much doubt it’s a fire risk.

If people are suggesting to unplug your TV every night - do you unplug every other appliance for fire saftey? Genuinely curious.

This was happening with us and my husband just realised he has the telly linked to his phone, so when he's swiped his phone in middle of night (usually if our DC has woken and he's using the phone torch) he's been accidentally switching on the telly (which we haven't realised straight away). Mystery solved Smile

Ours does this too at the exact same times -it's Sky and it only started about a month ago. I really must refresh the box. Our tv is Sony :)

Take the plug out at the wall.
If it still comes on by itself sell it asap.

BettyOBarley · 13/11/2021 23:21

Ours turns back on every time we switch the main living room light on, no idea why.

We call this the infraghost. I don't really think it's a ghost, presumably something to do with software updates.

Re house fires: 35k house fires last year, for circa 25 million homes. So a 0.14% chance per year of a fire. Of those, less than 1/10th are caused by non-cooking electrical appliances. So there's a 12/100,000 chance that any of the appliances in your house will cause a house fire in any given year. I think those are odds I'm prepared to take in return for a life where I don't have to remember to switch off every appliance in the house every night and turn it on every morning.
