Inspired by thread about happy films, we enjoyed it for sure, but:

Why is Andie Macdowell in it? so wooden
Why doesn't Hugh marry the lovely Kristen Scott Thomas?
How come Hugh is the only one to know sign language - so when he is not there, none of them talk to David?
Why are they all at the Scottish wedding? Andie can barely have met John Hannah, for instance.
Why is it ok for Hugh and Andie to sleep together when she is engaged?
Why is Lydia so vindictive as to put Hugh on a table with all his exes (ok that's fir comic effect i guess)
How come there is a parking space right outside the church?
Why does Hugh have no luggage with him at wedding one - does he drive home in his morning suit?

I have another question. Am I the only woman in the known universe who thought this was a crap film?

No, I agree with you. I’ve never really got the love for it.

Except for John Hannah, whom I love, and would watch anything with him in. Might watch sliding doors tomorrow.

MrsMadderRose · 30/10/2021 23:36

Yes Carrie is the worst character ever. Why does she shag Hugh and string him along but marry Hamish? It's not explained - she says she loves him at her wedding to him, but why would she? Also why doesn't she have her own guests to come to her own wedding?

When I first saw FWAAF I hadn't seen Andie McD in anything else and thought she was just pants. But then I saw Groundhog Day and she's great in that. It's so odd.

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 30/10/2021 23:37

Also why doesn't she have her own guests to come to her own wedding?

Presumably because she is such a massive bellend she doesn't actually have any friends.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/10/2021 23:37

I like HG best when he plays total cads & villains.

Yes...he's horribly good in 'An Awfully Big Adventure'.

MrsMadderRose · 30/10/2021 23:39

He's totally fabulous in Paddington 2 as well.

Hamsteronrollerblades · 30/10/2021 23:41

I am still sad that I don’t have lots of super posh friends who had country house or Scots castle weddings. Well I went to one - though the back story to that had more drama than the movie.

AM is a great actress and a beautiful woman. She played this like it was a hostage situation.

clary · 30/10/2021 23:41

To be fair there are some hideous Americans at Carrie's wedding - including Chester.

I think she marries Hamish BC she is a greedy bag - look at her glee at the wedding list.

I do love that Hugh and Andie have both allowed time to age them instead of going all hamster cheeked, pointy eyebrows and puffy.

I saw FW&AF with a housemate. Housemate exited gushing about how marvelous FW&AF was. I was just biting my tongue in great confusion. I enjoyed many bits loved John Hannah's character but loathed almost every moment AMcD was on screen. Especially last scene, of course. I would like to watch a version that has virtually every scene with AM removed. I suspect that's a quite good flick.

Well, it looks like Citizen Kane compared to the rest of Richard Curtis’s output.

I love FWAAF. I like the attention to detail. Every time you watch it, you notice a little something you missed before, such as the woman who tells Tom that she met her husband at a wedding and it turns out she is actually married to a vicar. Love the senile old boy who is furious when Charles turns out to have the same name as his brother. Love the elderly lesbian who questions Fiona about her sexuality. So many great details, which help to counteract the bloody awful AMD!

TSSDNCOP · 31/10/2021 01:13

The point isn't to love HG or AMD in my opinion, but all the others. Wouldn't you love to go to either a W or a F with any of them? Plus the music.

Ozgirl75 · 31/10/2021 01:50

I love HG in everything! Thought he was dishy when younger but I LOVE him in things he’s done more recently like Paddington 2 (where he has photos of himself all around his house Grin), the thing where he was a gay MP, he was brilliantly awful. I also like that he’s letting himself age. He’s still very handsome.

Maireas · 31/10/2021 07:19

I thought Hugh Grant was excellent as Jeremy Thorpe.
He wasn't the first choice in Four Weddings, that was Alan Rickman, who turned it down.

Elderflower14 · 31/10/2021 07:29

I love the scene when the woman is fingerspelling "I think you are very mice!" 🤣 🤣 🤣

GoingForAWalk · 31/10/2021 07:30

AMD was the 6th or something American actress choice for the part. She only agreed to do it for a % of the profits so made quite a bit from it around 2Million I believe.

A bit like the Star Wars actors. Rubbish pay but huge payouts if films did well which of course they did.

The other actors in Four Weddings didn't ask for the same deal and I know that Charlotte for instance only made £30K from her part in the film despite her and its popularity.

longwayoff · 31/10/2021 07:40

Sex with bras on? It's the American collective terror of The Nipple. A Nipple, women, is so offensive, vulgar and/or possibly something that may drive us all into an uncontained sexual frenzy, that it cannot be seen on US tv. I refer you all to Botched, a programme that is 50% about breast surgery. Obviously, naked breasts abound. But no nipples. Titties everywhere being examined, or operated on, but with pixellated nipples. Utterly weird.

BalloonSlayer · 31/10/2021 07:44

Andie McDowell has often done the "low fee but % of profits" thing, so she does some interesting films as a consequence. She first became famous in Sex Lies and Videotape which was v low budget, same arrangement I think. Good for her, it means she can take on interesting projects which don't have megabucks to pay.

Clawdy · 31/10/2021 07:45

Haven't seen it for years, but loved it when I watched at the cinema - apart from the scene where the older man in the pub is reminiscing fondly about some old school acquaintance who "buggered me senseless...." Hated that bit.

Karwomannghia · 31/10/2021 07:54

I was obsessed with marmalade Atkins and was so excited when I found out we’d stayed in the same BnB (not at the same time!) such a shame.

I liked how in KST's Fleabag appearance she repeated the "are you a lesbian?" line to Fleabag. Wasn't sure if that was an intentional in-joke or not.
