Where are all the lockdown runners?

Just back from a beautiful run.

No wind
Light chill
Beautiful morning light

No one running. Not a single person! I ran through two beautiful parks and some road.

I’ve run for 15 years. Pre covid I’d always pass a handful
During lockdown it was like Piccadilly Circus. And bare in mind I run early!
Post lockdown…. Where have all the runners gone?

Didn’t you get the bug?!

I don't run but DH is at Parkrun today and is still doing his monthly marathons and occasional ultra runs.

liveforsummer · 16/10/2021 09:56

Getting ready to go to the pub probably- anyway I'm glad as round here the lockdown runners did not have good path sharing etiquette and was forever dodging them

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 16/10/2021 09:58

@MintJulia

I was out this morning, it was lovely.

Parkrun is not back in Newbury where West Berks Council are playing stupid games and have let everyone down again.

A council that definitely doesn't give a toss about the health or wellbeing of its tax payers.

To be fair Nothing to actually stop those runners doing the same run of their own accord

It was annoying But I tried to be patient They just didn’t have the experience. If they’d kept at it, many would have got the etiquette in time

Injured Sad. Would love to be out there on this gorgeous morning, but I'm being good and having a few days rest, and sitting on an ice pack.

Enko · 16/10/2021 10:05

Badly sprained ankle here no running for 6 weeks. Hmm got 10 K run booked in May but right now no running.

Ds is back in the gym. During lockdown he did a lot of running to keep fit but its not his mojo so now gym is back he goes there.

Kezzie200 · 16/10/2021 10:22

I thought Saturdays was parkruns and Sundays more the norm for long runs? Might find more put tomorrow.

NatMoz · 16/10/2021 10:25

I've ran for 10 years but found out I was pregnant in April so have had to stop as I've had miscarriages before and didn't want to risk it. Will be back out again after the birth once I'm allowed!

PinkBuffalo · 16/10/2021 10:32

I am back in the gym and loving it 🙂

HugeAckmansWife · 16/10/2021 10:37

You sound quite critical and superior, like people are not living up to your high standards. 'they can do the parkrun route anyway'. Just because you love it, doesn't mean everyone must or they're wrong. I'm a reluctant runner. I like the benefits but don't actively enjoy it and haven't put my trainers on since I did a half marathon in September. Sue me.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 16/10/2021 10:47

Had been running for a couple of years before lockdown so wasn't a new runner - didn't notice so many new runners round here but lots of walkers everywhere. Obviously they are all doing whatever they did before!

I normally run Saturday morning but have literally just had covid. Thinking I might try for the first time tomorrow.

What are you on about? Grin

I said I loved seeing increased runners during lockdown
I said I didn’t get exasperated in the slightest. as another poster mentioned
And I hoped they’d return to it

Talk about seeing shadows where there aren’t any

Forget the run, i think a nice blast of fresh air on a walk would do you good! Grin

My 2 nearest park runs are quite inconvenient and are laps rather than one big loop which I prefer so I'd never do the route if park run wasn't happening.

deeni · 16/10/2021 10:51

Personally I like how it's got a bit quieter again (more of a lockdown walker than runner but still - it definitely turned my exercise habits around!)

TheTempest · 16/10/2021 10:54

I’m not a runner but I am a dog Walker. My usual route was absolutely rammed the whole of lockdowns last year, this year back to normal with the odd new person who’s become a regular. I am quite grateful to be fair, but I do feel bad for all those dogs who got used to a walk when there was nothing else to do, and now presumably don’t get walked much Confused

I don't think that's necessarily the case - people's routines were different over lockdown, so their dogs were probably walked more/at different times as a result of that.

I'm a professional dog walker and temporarily lost a lot of clients over the lockdowns as their owners were around to walk them instead. Just because the owners are no longer walking them at the times they did during lockdown, doesn't mean they're not getting walked at all.

I did long walks later in the day with my own dog during lockdown as I had more time to kill. Now he gets walked first thing as it has to fit around my job.

Scarby9 · 16/10/2021 11:10

I'm back physically in work. Back to the 2hr commute. Back to leaving and arriving home in the dark. Much less time, and less motivation for exercise, unfortunately.

HugeAckmansWife · 16/10/2021 11:16

Don't want to get into a fight, I'm perfectly chilled thanks, but your op just struck me as one of those 'I love this so how come not everyone does?' as pp have said, in lockdown people had time, childcare, fuck all else options. It's hardly surprising that many people will have now reverted to whatever they were doing before.

Mumbean12 · 16/10/2021 11:19

They are all on a Peloton 🤣

I read it this way too.

Moving on….

The dogs. My children and I do borrow a doggie. It’s brilliant. Highly recommend (we don’t own, we walk the dogs)

I was at parkrun this morning. There’s a marathon and 10 mile run here tomorrow so the people doing that may well not have been out this morning.

I took up running again during lock down and have kept on going. Round here the number of runners has stayed about the same I think.
