I thought it was obviously a typo, OP, but as his family actually used to be "Cheese" some starting saying it was his real name. It isn't though!

John Cleese was never known as Cheese. It's NOT his name, nor was it ever.

It's also the clothes, hairstyles and dodgy tashe from that era that make him look older.

Style and fashion - look how old Diana looked in the 1980s. Presumably she looked in her 20s to people in their 20s then - or did she?

Health and fitness. Ronaldo is fanatical. Cleese presumably smoked and stayed up late etc. But he doesn't look that old in close ups, in the first series. No problem believing he was late thirties.

Whereas Prunella Scales has always looked younger than her age. In the late 1980s she was in her mid fifties when she was playing a widow in her early 40s in sitcom After Henry.

It was the clothes, I was looking g through my parents wedding album recently they have just celebrated their Golden wedding, and got married in1971, my Grandma can't have been older than her early 50,s but the outfit she was dressed in could put here anywhere between the ages of 50 - 80

They were showing it on some random channel few weeks ago, possibly forces TV?

Sadly the actual hotel was knocked down a couple of years ago and is now a horrid modern block of retirement flats. Lovely location.

Does anyone else wonder how Basil and Sybil ever got together? ("Black magic, my mother said"). Every time me and my husband watch Fawlty Towers we say how we'd love the back story of how they met and why they got married.

He talked about this in an interview. He said Sybil was probably originally attracted to Basil's old-fashioned prudishness. Don't think he said what Basil liked about her, though.
