My cat just got run over

Not expecting anyone to be up but I need to tell someone because I'm all out of sorts and everyone is asleep.

My cat has just been hit by a car on the road outside😭

The one positive is the lady that hit her made so much commotion while ringing someone my dogs heard, started barking and I looked out the window and there she was - at least I picked her up when warm and she was not run over more.

Oh no ! So sorry sending you hugs xxxx

SortingItOut · 10/10/2021 03:37

@brittleheadgirl I've had a coffee.
Madeleine is not a common name for a cat, we called her Maddie for years but then my neighbours got 2 dogs and one was called Maddie and I worried her dog would think I was calling her if I called my cat so we reverted back to Madeleine.
Even after my neighbours dog died I kept her as Madeleine.

Are they too far away to come home for a bit next weekend? I mean if you feel that would help you and them.

@NiceGerbil Not too far away luckily, my DD is due back in 2 weeks anyway as my brother is getting married.

I think she'll be ok, my kids are quite pragmatic about the death of pets, but I'm sad she'll be on her own when I tell her.

I think you might be on your own as well. Look after yourself :)

SortingItOut · 10/10/2021 03:54

@NiceGerbil My son who is in his 20's is here but he is sound asleep.

I have a boyfriend who I don't live with and he has always said I can ring him anytime of day or night but I don't want to wake him just to tell him my cat died because what can he do. And then it's 2 people who haven't slept properly.

I”m sorry to hear this, pets are part of the family aren’t they and leave a huge gap when they are gone. It sounds like she was a much loved and cherished cat.
I doubt it is much comfort during these small hours but perhaps you can take comfort that Madeleine wouldn’t have felt pain because it was so quick.

NiceGerbil · 10/10/2021 04:13

I'd tell son in morning. Your right not to wake.

Bury the cat with you tomorrow and BF if appropriate. Give a good send off.

Xx

This happened to mine recently except he was horribly injured and alive. Unfortunately I had to have him put down. How brother also suffered the same fate (not the same area as we've since moved). Sadly I watched it happen to his brother who died on scene. It's absolutely traumatic. I. So very sorry for your loss and the sadness that goes with it. I was talked into another one after a week and have the loveliest kitten. I won't be letting him out though! Much love.

@SortingItOut - All my best wishes - my first cat was run over the day I got back from my honeymoon - bless her. Her name was Rita. Not sure why but it amused me at the time. ( the name - not the running over ) She only had 3 legs as she injured one so badly it had to be amputated - but she did not know so you could see her trying to scratch her ear with the leg she did not have & you would have to do it for her. Lovely girl.

I have a beautiful photograph of her.

All best wishes to you

You poor thing. So sorry for your loss. Ask for this thread to be moved to the litter tray - there’s a Memorial section and you’ll get some even more helpful advice Flowers and virtual hug.

MrGruber · 10/10/2021 06:00

Oh you poor lady . You gave Madeleine. - such an elegant dignified name - a happy life with your family , even more of an achievement as you say she was a timid girl

You are being so strong for your DC and lovely to not want to bother your boyfriend . I know you want him to sleep but if I were him I wouldn"t wnt you feeling like this without my knowing - he said to ring anytime because he meant it

Hope you can doze xx

Igmum · 10/10/2021 06:27

Oh I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers.
I was never a cat person but when my dad died 4 years ago we took in his ragdoll and I've changed my mind about cats. They really do become part of the family and I'm so sorry about your Madeleine Sad.

Immaculatemisconception · 10/10/2021 07:13

I’m so sorry to read this. Big hugs. 😢

CalmingRoseQuartz · 10/10/2021 07:51

So sorry to hear this, OP. Can well imagine what a shock it must've been to lose a beloved cat in those circumstances.

RIP Madeleine.

ThirdElephant · 10/10/2021 08:03

So sorry, OP. I once lost a cat to being run over and it was heartbreaking. For me it was how sudden and unexpected it was and the feeling that I was so close to time they were still alive but incapable of getting back there. So sorry. Flowers
