Decent, not expensive changing table - we can’t just use the floor

Looking for a changing table that doesn’t cost the earth. We can’t just change baby on the floor because my husband is disabled and kneeling down is a real issue for him.

We had an IKEA table for no 1 but found that it had a fair few crevices that did not make it easy to clean. Got rid of that once DS was a toddler as we have had a long journey getting to the point of having another baby.

Please help me out - I can’t spend hundreds on a changing table! At the same time DS was an extremely frequent and… ahem… prolific nappy filler so I’m trying to prepare for the same! We need something that’s up to the job. Thank you!

I bought ours second hand from a charity furniture shop. Is that, or Gumtree/Facebook an option?

Try Facebook market place people sell them for pittance as they are so rarely purchased and bulky so they just want them out the way.

Failing that look on eBay and sort by listings closest to you that are collection only. We got ours for about 6 quid as no one else bid on the auction.

Does it have to be a table? We changed ours on the top of an ikea chest of drawers. Nappies etc in the top drawer.

Yeah we used an IKEA chest of drawers too. With a mat on top with padded sides.

I'm disabled and I used to put the changing mat on the sofa and then the bed would that work?

I use top of a 2x2 kallax with a high sided IKEA changing mat on top. Drawers and baskets underneath filled with supplies.

We had a cot top changer plus mat for around £30 worked well and saved on space

What kind of position will be comfortable for your husband? I found the top of the chest of drawers best when tiny, had a cot top changing mat too but it was too low and I had to lean forward (also was in the firing line for unexpected extras!)
Have a think about what will work for him (seated, perching, high enough) and then work from there.

Absolutely not the point i know but I sit on the floor to change nappies, with the mat between my legs, rather than kneel.

I hope you find a solution that isn't too expensive!

Can you not just pop a mat on a higher surface? A chest of drawers, table, counter, bed, sofa?

You could any random piece of furniture at the right height from FB for cheap. Obviously just never leave the babe without a hand on them.

A second hand cot top changer would be fairly cheap or a towel laid on the dining table or other surface you already have.

I don't know if they still do them but when mine were little the travel cot came with an extra bit that fitted on top that was perfect to use for changing safely at a comfortable height.

We just bought ikea hauga it has raised border on three sides.

We are really happy with it.

We have a changing mat on top of baby's chest of drawers which is much more practical than a changing table (and often cheaper! Nursery furniture is a rip off)

I just used a chest of drawers. The top drawer had all the nappy changing stuff and then the others drawers were for clothes.

We had a standard John Lewis one for DC1. The change mat filled the top of it and it wasn’t difficult to clean.m

They don’t do the same one but in style it was similar to this one so great for having everything to hand without having to bend too far.

There are also a few changing mats with safety harnesses if that helps, I think you'd need to look into the safety aspects yourself, as I've not heard much about that in practice

Thanks. We don’t have a cot - we have a co-sleeper thing and the cot we had turned into DS’s bed, which he’s still in. I’m not sure about changing on our bed as DS did so many poos and I’m trying to be prepared for the same thing. Honestly he was right at the top of the ‘normal’ range and could be quite dramatic!

I’ll look at other furniture possibilities. It’s just a matter of finding something both small enough and sturdy enough to fit in the space.
