Could this be appendicitis?

12 year old has a pain in his right side, but it only hurts when he lies down.

He's had it all day and is currently unable to get to sleep as he can't lie down.

I wouldn't be that worried only it's on his right side.

Could it be the beginning of appendicitis or should I not worry?

And, has anyone got any tips for helping him to be able to sleep?

It's not lower right. On closer inspection of DS, it's more mid right. It's above the level of his belly button, half way between his belly button and his nipple.

So where his liver is then?

Ds 13 had this in january. Tummy ache near his belly button. Wasn't particularly ill. No temp. 1 episode of vomiting. Looked ok but I just had a feeling. Gp wasn't sure but referred him to paeds. Surgeon not convinced so sent him for an US. 6 hours later appendix out.
Fwiw the pain of appendicitis can be around the navel area.

So where his liver is then?

Yes, just looking at an image, it's in the approximate area of his liver, and nowhere near the appendix, nor his belly button.

I didn't take him in as it seemed pretty clear to me it's not appendicitis. It's not in the right place.

He slept well in the end. He say's it's still there this morning but again, only when he's lying down.

Googling liver issues has given me a whole new bunch of things to be worried about!

If he still has it when he gets home from school, I'll seek further help then.

It still doesn't hurt if I touch it. And, he's not in pain at all when he's standing up.

My son had it in a different place from normal. He did have some rebound tenderness - so if you press the area it hurts more when you release the pressure but generally felt ok. I'd get him to the gps if I were you.

An update, the pain went away by the following afternoon, no idea what it was but it didn't last, just an odd thing, in the end. Glad I didn't drag him to A&E on a school night!

Thanks to those who posted, even those who badgered me to go to A&E! I guess if we were having this discussion in real life, you may have quickly realised that it was in the wrong place and my grasp on anatomy perhaps leaves something to be desired!

But glad I got there in the end. I appreciate being able to talk this stuff over here, I find that I think better "out loud".
