Hello @babachic , well that's progress. Keep on top of (ie nag!) for a next appointment date with the specialist. Did your GP say how long they expect you to have to wait?
Specialists vary in approach but will often do more bloods, give you an examination (in the past that would be feeling your stomach but obvs can only be done face to face!, and in some cases using a proctoscope to look inside your rectum (but they don't do that very often and tend to do a colonoscopy / scan / X-ray instead as it shows more than just the end bit).
They'll ask you lots of questions too. Be prepared with answers like:
when the trouble started,
any bowl habit changes you've noticed,
pain: constant, after eating, after eating certain foods, where? , what type (throbbing, sharp, ache or sharp etc)?
Family history of bowel cancer and other cancers or bowel disease (they always ask)
Any meds you are taking , any allergies
Generally how are you feeling in yourself, and how stressed /chilled out you are (stress has a massive impact on bowel behaviour);
Again, make sure you leave the appointment with a clear view on next steps as it's easy to forget and get flustered. For example:
will someone send you an appointment for colonoscopy/follow up tests or do you have to book?
Likely wait time?
Follow up specialist appointment - when? and who books it?
In what timeframe do they need /expect to see you in?
Have a list of questions, like
- what are you testing for/looking for?
- what can you do to help alleviate symptoms /speed up diagnosis ?
- should you be changing diet at this stage ? (Prob not but worth asking)
And so on.
Apologies if this is a bit 'grandma sucking eggs' but it's easy to get overwhelmed by this stuff (especially bottom stuff
) and being prepared always helps. Please feel free to ignore and go 🙄 if this isn't helpful and was bleeding obvious
In the meantime, look after yourself, try do do some relaxation, eat some good food (a glass of orange juice with high iron food aids iron absorption), get some time out in nature to clear your head. See your friends, enjoy life. You deserve it
Let us know how you get on.
