What is wrong with me

I'm in so much pain I can barely move, had constant stomach/lower back pains since Tuesday. Thought it was a tummy bug due to nature of the pain but had no vomiting or diarrhoea, just non stop nausea. My entire body aches and I'm exhausted but nothing.l seems to be helping 😭

Was at out of hours last night where they did a pregnancy test and test on my kidneys and all came back ok, just some protein in my urine, and it was ruled as stomach bug but Ihave never been so unwell with a bug before.

Getting myself in a state as over the past few months I've had issues with my stools (blood streaks, pain, blood in the toilet) but I haven't told anyone because my GP surgery is impossible to get through to on the phone and I didn't say to the hospital last night because I was too concerned about the back pain and possible kidney issues (this is what they were focusing on too)

I'm supposed to be back at work tomorrow and I'm in so much pain and feel constantly sick and I just want to know what is wrong and how to make it better 😭

Hello @babachic , well that's progress. Keep on top of (ie nag!) for a next appointment date with the specialist. Did your GP say how long they expect you to have to wait?

Specialists vary in approach but will often do more bloods, give you an examination (in the past that would be feeling your stomach but obvs can only be done face to face!, and in some cases using a proctoscope to look inside your rectum (but they don't do that very often and tend to do a colonoscopy / scan / X-ray instead as it shows more than just the end bit).

They'll ask you lots of questions too. Be prepared with answers like:
when the trouble started,
any bowl habit changes you've noticed,
pain: constant, after eating, after eating certain foods, where? , what type (throbbing, sharp, ache or sharp etc)?
Family history of bowel cancer and other cancers or bowel disease (they always ask)
Any meds you are taking , any allergies
Generally how are you feeling in yourself, and how stressed /chilled out you are (stress has a massive impact on bowel behaviour);

Again, make sure you leave the appointment with a clear view on next steps as it's easy to forget and get flustered. For example:

will someone send you an appointment for colonoscopy/follow up tests or do you have to book?
Likely wait time?
Follow up specialist appointment - when? and who books it?
In what timeframe do they need /expect to see you in?

Have a list of questions, like

  • what are you testing for/looking for?
  • what can you do to help alleviate symptoms /speed up diagnosis ?
  • should you be changing diet at this stage ? (Prob not but worth asking)
And so on.

Apologies if this is a bit 'grandma sucking eggs' but it's easy to get overwhelmed by this stuff (especially bottom stuff Grin) and being prepared always helps. Please feel free to ignore and go 🙄 if this isn't helpful and was bleeding obvious Grin

In the meantime, look after yourself, try do do some relaxation, eat some good food (a glass of orange juice with high iron food aids iron absorption), get some time out in nature to clear your head. See your friends, enjoy life. You deserve it Smile

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you, your replies have really helped settle my nerves a bit Thanks

The doctor said the waiting list is huge just now but as my fit test was positive and a high result it would be an upgraded referral so should be quicker. Still haven't heard a thing though so going to get in touch tomorrow to ask for an update.

getting lots of pains again in my lower stomach and left hand side, was hoping it wouldn't come back Sad

I've made a list of questions as you advised so hoping i can get seen to quite quickly. The calprotectin test was negative so she said it's unlikely to be inflammation related diseases like IBD but not sure if that's better or worse than the high internal bleeding result Confused

just hate this waiting game!

@babachic sorry to hear that you're suffering Sad

Sometimes a hot water bottle helps.

If you are taking co-codamol make sure you drink lots (2 litres a day ) and plenty of fibre to make sure you don't get constipated on top of everything else!

Do keep chasing those appointments. Sometimes being a noisy nuisance is the right thing to do Grin

Phoning my GP again this afternoon for an update on the referral as the pains have started again and a new feeling, kind of like pressure after I've been to the toilet but like I still have to go Confused very uncomfortable.

Hoping i can get my appointment through soon 🤞

So my doctors gave me the wrong number to call, which i didn't realise until i'd be on hold for 20 minutes Envy but once i got through and explained, they were able to tell me the consultant who will be seeing me and passed me the details for their secretary directly.

Been told I've been pencilled in for an urgent scope sometime this month but will get an official appointment date by the end of the week/start of next.

This will be the longest week ever

has anyone else with these symptoms or similar really struggled with weight gain? feel like i'm just piling it on despite not eating most of the day, but possibly could be because i'm also off work and can barely get out of bed most days Confused
