Stretch marks...

I have a really boring musing about stretch marks as I was just admiring mine whilst sunbathing in the garden and wandering around mumsnet and putting the world to rights! Grin

I have quite a few stretch marks acquired on my thighs, boobs and hips during puberty. That was a long time ago and they've all faded now. I got them because I 'developed' quickly in a short space of time. I don't have any on my stomach as a result of pregnancy.

My 15 year old daughter was showing me hers last night. She has them on her hips, thighs, bum and boobs for the same reason - puberty. She entered lockdown looking like a little girl and came out of it most definitely a woman.

No one has ever commented on them until a couple of years ago until a man I was seeing asked if I'd put on/lost a lot of weight in the past. I hadn't/haven't but he didn't seem to believe me and said he'd never seen/noticed stretchmarks on a woman before (he'd never dated anyone with children). He really believed I'd done setting out of the ordinary to get them. I thought most women would have some at least.

Obviously he was an idiot Grin but I just wondered how common it is.

Tell me about your stretchmarks! (Exciting stuff!)

I didn't get any during puberty as I was a naturally very slim teen and always had very narrow hips and small boobs. I got some on my belly and boobs during pregnancy and then piled on 3 stone after birth so got some on my thighs too. They're all silver now.

@longue

weirdly older mums are far less likely to get them then young mums
Is that why I don't have any from pregnancy? I actually don't have any stretch marks.

My DP has them from puberty.

JingleTangle · 08/09/2021 06:40

Inner thighs and hips / abdomen at puberty for me. They started red hut faded fairly quickly (especially my thighs). Three pregnancies and my tummy is covered from under my bikini line to 3/4 of the way up my torso. A few very very faint ones on my breasts and also upper arm at the back.
My DD also has them, on her legs and arms but isn't particularly bothered. I know her friend, a boy, who has some spectacular ones on his back that he shows off as evidence of his incredible hulk prowess! Grin
My Mum shamed me a fair bit for mine, said she'd never seen it before, it must be because I was fat (I was chubby but not huge) none of her friends have them etc. I do think it's more common now and I wondered whether it's to do with the increase in oestrogen in the water (I'm not a scientist but read an article a few years back about fish eggs being influenced by increasing amount of oestrogen in the water course, no idea if that's the case or not but it sounded plausible).

Is it maybe due to elasticity? Younger women having tighter skin so it's harder to stretch.
vampirethriller · 08/09/2021 06:53

I've got silvery pink ones on my hips and stomach from a huge baby bump but they've faded a lot. You can't really see them unless you get close. Astral moisturiser was the best thing I found.

Dd has them 14 quite pronounced... Red welts on arms, chest, legs.

Interesting. I was 41 when I had DD, and don't have any.

I was a tiny skinny kid and then got bitchslapped by the family arse and hips during puberty. I have old stretchmarks all over my thighs, hips and arse. It wasn't about weight gain as such either - I continued to be a skinny kid, just a woman-shaped one.

I subsequently carried two babies to full term in my 30s without acquiring a single other one.

I was very self conscious of them in my teens but long ago stopped giving a shit. Incidentally, DH has a few on his back too, presumably from a period of rapid teen growth.

Dazedandc0nfused · 08/09/2021 07:29

I got stretch marks at about 15 years when I had growth spurt in height. Just the outer upper thigh/hip area. Never any through pregnancy.

delilahbucket · 08/09/2021 07:49

I've got them on my hips, thighs, backs of knees, tops of boobs, and then top of one arm from being lifted in and out of the shower. Don't even get me started on what pregnancy did to my stomach, a wrinkly mess of skin and lumpy keloid scars that will never look any better without surgery.
I scar very easily, even got one from my Covid vaccine. I have hypermobility which makes me prone to scars and stretch marks.

cactijones · 08/09/2021 09:33

I have them on my thighs and hips from puberty. I'm 28 weeks pregnant now and doing everything in my power to not get them on my stomach but I know they're genetic and my mum was covered in them 😭

TwinkleToeMatilda · 08/09/2021 12:25

Have them on my thighs. Got them when I was about 13. I have very very light ones on my boobs but nothing near what ones on my thighs look like.

Alwaysfuckingsick · 08/09/2021 12:32

I got them on my thighs and bum during puberty and then LOADS EVERYWHERE during my second pregnancy(none in my first oddly). They used to bother me loads but not now really.

BillyJoe111 · 08/09/2021 12:33

i was always very fat growing up so had stretch marks as a child’s. Lost 10 stone at 22, gained 10 stone back in two years at 36. Add in three pregnancies.

I look like I’ve been attacked by a tiger all over.

HummingBeeBox · 08/09/2021 12:37

My sister has horizontal ones on her thighs from a sudden height increase. I have loads of them on my boobs as they are huge and it happened quite quickly. Also back of the calves during puberty.

I also have a ton from pregnancy.

Most women I know have some somewhere from puberty.

My other sister doesn't as her skin is weirdly stretchy.

PepsiHoover · 08/09/2021 12:38

I have them everywhere. I don't give a shit TBH. It's not like I could have done anything for to prevent them at the time. And it's not like I can actually do anything to remove them that doesn't involve grafting my skin off and spending a small fortune.

I had bells palsy and temporary facial paralysis when I was pregnant with my second child. Being faced with the prospect of an actual facial disfigurement gave me a lot of perspective about my perceived flaws that I'd spent decades destroying myself about.

SpamIAm · 08/09/2021 13:04

My only ones from puberty are on the inside side of my knees (my brother has them too, we must be a family of rapid knee growers). I have a lot of self harm scars and have had many people not believe me that they're stretch marks because they're in such a weird place, not sure why they think I'd lie about those when I'm honest about my actual self harm scars 🤷‍♀️

Other than that I just have them on my stomach and hips from pregnancy. My friends who's boobs actually grew during puberty were covered in them though.
