Shall I spend the extra £750?

I've fallen in love with a sofa at sofa.com from a Sophie Robinson DIY SOS, it's a beautiful turquoise velvet, and £1000. The rug that looks great with it is from Ikea and £149.00.

I haven't got a sofa and do need to buy one, and want turquoise.

Ikea do an Ektorp sofa in a dark turquoise for £350.

How do you decide your budget for your furniture? I've just downsized and do have some equity left over to make the house 'my own' , I just always feel nervous of spending.

Bemz do excellent covers for Ikea furniture, here's their teal velvet Ektorp version. We have Bemz covers on a very old, very comfortable Karlanda sofa, and when it finally gives up the ghost I plan to see if I can find one on eBay and put some Bemz covers on it.

I've got an IKEA Ektorp (5 seater corner) and I love it so much. Had it for over a year and it's still like new. Save the £750!!

Don't buy anything that expensive without sitting on it first.

We've been sofa hunting recently and been shocked at the difference in how comfortable some sofas are. We've ended out forking out extra for comfort. Our old cheap sofas lasted ten plus years, so hoping paying more will give us twenty years + it doesn't seem so expensive that way.

Buy the one you want. Lifes too short.

Your children are grown OP - your job’s done, time for them to stand on their own two feet. If you keep saving for them you’ll never be able to spend on yourself before you drop dead!

So go, try the sofa out, and if you like it - buy it. With zero guilt. You’ve earned it after all these years 😃

MerryHellbreakingloose · 01/09/2021 20:47

I wasn't sure from your description but I absolutely love that sofa. And rug.

Get the more expensive one!!

Rhannion · 01/09/2021 20:48

Go for it, get the better quality sofa and the rug, you will enjoy them for years.

I’ve got a sofa.com sofa in velvet - smart velvet in ‘Neptune’
It’s absolutely divine! It’s 3 years old but looks good as new, is super comfy and all brightens up the room

Go for it!

I have this OP in 2 seater & 3 seater - lovesofas.co.uk/sofas/velvet-sofas/velvet-teal-3-seater-astbury-bella-sofa-plain-cushions.html

It's much much darker than the pics (dark turquoise) and very comfy!

Spend the money, fuck it

Pendhxa · 01/09/2021 20:57

You can never go wrong with an IKEA ektorp. People spend ££££ on sofas and then they are hard to clean/have other problems and they have major regret (and debt for the bloody thing in many cases).

Ektorp cases are washable and the sofas will have a long life.

DoubleTweenQueen · 01/09/2021 21:00

Sofa.com are a world apart from IKEA. I have sofas and chairs from sofa.com and Laura Ashley. The Sofa.com items are an absolute favourite and much better in style, quality and comfort. Had them all about 7 years.
Go for long-term enjoyment and quality , in my opinion and experience x

Ericabro · 01/09/2021 21:01

Please goggle the companies and read alternative websites csl ie sofa works are a nightmare company that rebranded because of negative websites any major purchase in life really reseach the company x

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/09/2021 21:02

No.

DoubleTweenQueen · 01/09/2021 21:08

@Salome61 I would definitely go to the sofa.com showroom first and try out for comfort as different styles do feel different to sit on.

whatthejiggeries · 01/09/2021 21:08

Buy it

AuntieDolly · 01/09/2021 21:13

How about the IKEA stocksund?

crimsonlake · 01/09/2021 21:13

I would never buy without trying it out. Love the colour and fabric, but my worry would be about fading.

Salome61 · 01/09/2021 21:34

Thank you everyone, all of your comments and links to other lovely sofas have been so helpful. I had to leave my huge Tetrad behind when I sold my house, I really miss it.

I will take your advice and do the 'sit' test first before I buy, I'm really pleased to find there is a concession at the Metrocentre in Gateshead, hopefully I'll be able to meet my son there and he can test it with me :)

Ooh its gorgeous! Us mums always put ourselves last. Go on treat yourself for once and every time you sit on it you will feel like a queen! Do it! 👑

DollyDinkle · 01/09/2021 21:50

Spend the extra. A sofa gets used so much it should be the most expensive you can afford.

Salome61 · 01/09/2021 21:55

Thank you AuntieDolly I've just got down to your post and seen the Stocksund - it's almost identical in shape and comes in a lovely blue! Need to sit on that too when I'm in Gateshead.
