Alternative to Sky TV?

MyLifeNow20 · 30/08/2021 21:05

Hi.
I will be out of contract beginning of november. I have sky Q and pay nearly £75 a month which is ridiculous. I dont watch half the channels, have movies and netflix. Have asked them to remove these but they said they cant.
I tend to watch things on netflix or may watch soaps (but know you can watch them on catch up) or maybe a box set or movie.
I would rather not have to pay out each month and wondering what other options there are?
Thanks!

www.netflix.com
www.nowtv.com/
www.disneyplus.com/

Pricing online and no contract. They roll over monthly. You can leave by just going to your accounts page online. Non of the faff like sky.

I like it better than the Amazon fire stick for Netflix. Fire stick works really well with Amazon prime though!

GlamourSpider · 30/08/2021 22:21

Ditched Sky here, already had Prime for the free deliveries and signed up to Netflix.

Just go to cancel
My boost is £2.00 a month for six months
Just keep going it asks you at least twice to confirm cancellation then throws up a good offer
Worth doing I’ve been a customer three years now and never paid full price I don’t bother with the movies though or hayu

Smart tv and I dip into now, Netflix and Amazon. I always get offers on now tv, think I'm paying £5.00 per month for the entertainment package.

I use a chromecast dongle so have streaming apps on my phone, or use their website on laptop, just find show and cast to the TV. The roku stick is so slow.

Do people really pay for all the streaming services at the same time? I hop about a bit. Stopped my Netflix subscription to try Disney at the beginning of the year. I pay the licence fee so can watch Freeview channels legally and the apps from those places (all 4 is a favourite). Will probably go back to Netflix. Amazon I tried on a trial for a month but seemed limited. Apple TV is very limited. I've not tried NowTV but I've never had Sky.

We recently moved out of a property with sky - we knew it would be a few months until we move into our onwards purchase so we cancelled sky and husband got an Amazon fire stick. I wouldn't go so far to say I hate it but my god I'm missing the ease of sky..... it freezes quite a bit here. And if you watch a movie and it randomly switches off then you have to start it again and fast forward.

Unless I'm missing something you can't pause to nip to loo/make a cuppa etc!

My husband doesn't want it but I really want my sky tv back!

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 30/08/2021 22:58

Hi there. We binned off virginmedia as we never watched anything other than the 'usual' channels. We have a fire stick with Netflix, now tv, Amazon. I don't miss it at all.

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 30/08/2021 22:59

@niki26 they are streamed and you can stop or pause, then continue from the same or another device. It’s not live tv. We do that a lot going from TV to tablet.

@Rollercoaster1920 you probably have a old roku stick? I have chrome cast, roku and fire stick at home. Also a new LG smart tv. Don’t use the chrome cast now because DH has swapped to Apple phone and I have always had Apple. Not the LG apps either because it doesn’t have Les Mills on demand and I don’t like using the remote as a point and click device. I find they are all the same speed really. It’s just user interface preference. Laptop will be the slowest for me because of the time they take to boot up.

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 30/08/2021 23:02

@niki26 streaming do freeze if you have slow internet. We have the 66mb fibre and a mesh wifi network. I find changing to mesh wifi makes a huge difference to being able to have all of us streaming at the same time.

niki26 · 30/08/2021 23:07

@ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast thanks! I must be missing something then as the pause button on the remote doesn't pause at all!

Although - actually, I think I know what the issue is.....it's when I'm watching channels on the app (TLC, Watch, Really) etc. So perhaps that's different?

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 01/09/2021 13:28

@niki26 yes whether you can pause depends on the app and if it's live tv. The reason you can pause on sky is that it saves what you missed on a hard disk on the box. Some apps, like channel 4 I found doesn't let you restart from where you left off last time. (Pause probably works for channel 4, but not if you turn it off and come back a day later).

Hi Niki,

I have a service called nowplex where I can watch watch anything literally anything lol…Disney Plus , Amazon Prime , Netflix US & UK, all SKY channels all freeview channels… BT Sports & Sky Sports, my boyfriend can watch any sport he wants, and the kids can watch any cartoon
It’s costs is £23 a month, and all you need is a firestick,
If you you want to know more just give us a message 😊

ISpyCobraKai · 19/09/2021 16:25

Call Sky, tell them you want to leave and the bill will come right down.
I pay £56 for mine which includes Netflix, phone, Internet, and the package I want.
Repeat once a year.

HevLTown · 19/09/2021 17:27

My advice would be to get the Amazon firestick and download a streaming app I use, I can literally watch anything I want , You can watch Disney Plus , Amazon Prime , Netflix US & UK, Apple TV , SKY channels & movies Live TV, Any sports channel you want,
Only costs £23 a month keeps the boyf and the kids love it, not having to pay loads in subscriptions.
