Hernias. I have two. Anybody have any experience of having one/multiple?

I'm 31 weeks pregnant at the moment so nothing can be done about them for a while, but I'm feeling quite down in the dumps and wondering whether I'll have to live with them long term.

I had unresolved diastasis recti after my last baby which I believe is the reason these buggers have cropped up during this pregnancy. I have an umbilical one and now an epigastric one that appeared today.

They're not huge but will probably get bigger.

Is there anything I should be avoiding? Will a repair be forthcoming after I give birth or do you think I'll have to live with them long term? Any chance of a repair during a c section? Grin

My son had 2 growing up (identical places to you). He grew out of them, or they healed themselves.

I had an umbilical one which was caused by diastasis rectii. I had it repaired on the nhs (still have the DR though!)

Interesting to hear that they can repair themselves, Hen. DS had an ingunial (sp?) one when he was a baby and they were keen to operate within weeks.

How was the operation GiantCheese? Was you in much pain afterwards and have to limit your exercise etc?

I had one when I was in my early twenties. Think it was caused by a scar similar to a cesarean one from an op years earlier.

Had it operated on. From what I can remember, it healed quickly and I had to rest for a couple of weeks they used a mesh and even through three pregnancies, it's never given me any trouble

That's really good to know, Nota.

I was going to ask whether they'd consider repairing them during my section but it's probably not that likely really. I won't be able to do that much resting with a new baby and older DC at home so probably best I save my request until youngest is a bit older.

Ugh I'm falling apart at the seams Grin

I have an umbilical hernia (from birth) and I'm 33. It's never bothered me except when I over-eat and get discomfort there.

My 6 year old DS had both an umbilical and epigastric hernia. I have no idea when they disappeared but he no longer has them

My 4 year old DD has both and they're still visible. Not big, but you can see them. It's never occured to me to have anything done to them as I assumed/assume they'll disappear, and also because she's never said they bother her.

I'm sorry to hear about the DR, OP

It was repaired under general anaesthetic- they didn’t use mesh, for reasons I can’t remember now. It was a day case and they signed me off for a fortnight. It was really sore for a few days but got easier soon after that. I needed codeine though (and then got constipation obviously which didn’t help) so I wouldn’t have wanted it straight after a section if you’re planning to bf. Tbh I would wait anyway as you get a better result if you can rest properly, which you’re not going to do with a newborn!

Hello,

I know this is an old post, but I'm facing the same issues now and was wondering what happened with your hernias in the end please?
