Does anyone have a separate letter box on their house?

We need a new front door and the design we really really like can't have a letter box in (long glass panel in the way).

We could just pick a different door or we could have a separate box for post next to the front door.

Has anyone got one? Is it a hassle if you go away and it fills up?

@CherryMaple

Yes we have one - new fancy front door wouldn’t take a letterbox. We love it. The front is lockable. It’s tall. No one could put their arm in and get the post out - there’s a chute you drop the letters and parcels into, and you can’t put your arm inside. It will take parcels as big as a shoe box. The postman says he wishes everybody had one Grin
@CherryMaple do you know the name of the one you have?

@CorpusCallosum

Can your door just have a letterbox near the bottom under the glass panel?
The safety / integrity of the door reduces if you do. Much easier to kick in the door if the letter box is around the edge.

We are after one of these too; I'd seen these nice ones on Etsy www.etsy.com/uk/listing/768856337/the-statement-stainless-steel-letterbox?ref=related-1&pro=1&frs=1- anyone got one of these?

@AntiHop

Don't do this. I know someone who did this and her post was stolen for identity theft, leading to loans and credit cards taken out in her name.
They're standard where I live and they're down at the edge of the driveway beside the road, not next to the house. This is suburbs not rural. They're all easy to access just flip the lid. I don't know anyone this has ever happened to.

We do at our office. They tend to rust, even the good quality ones. We've just replaced ours after 10 years.

Yes it can get full up if you leave it to long and the depth can restrict what they can put in too. A4 inflexible packages won't go in ours.

Hen2018 · 29/08/2021 10:08

Yes, we have a separate box. Good for parcels to be left in.

I don’t live in an area where anyone is going to steal stuff from it.

Squirrel26 · 29/08/2021 12:03

Yes. It came with the house. It's a PITA as it's not really big enough for anything magazine-sized and up, but they get shoved in anyway and then won't come out without ripping. Plus the key snapped off in the lock so now it's unlockable.

I'm going to replace it with a bigger one just as soon as I can summon the motivation to do it.

I have a cheap one from B&M or similar, had it years and I love it!
I’d never go back to a door flap

Redshoeblueshoe · 29/08/2021 12:21

The only problem I've had with mine is the post sometimes got wet.
To solve it I just put a layer of corks in the bottom.

@DismantledKing

I had one in the past. Handy for collecting rain and spiders.

My neighbour has a microwave.

Does that help?

Caspianberg · 29/08/2021 12:32

I don’t think anyone has integrated letter box here. When we got a new door and asked they thought we were mad and said it’s like leaving window open in the middle of winter 24/7 in terms of heat loss

Anyway, we have a separate at the bottom of drive. Saves postman time, most neighbours have the same. I prefer it tbh, it’s bigger and we actually leave the key part unlocked so our postman can put small parcels in. But you can get ones that lock and have key code for deliveries now that are bigger. I would get one of those

Ughmaybenot · 29/08/2021 12:43

We’ve a post box at the end of our farm lane. It’s a hassle for the poor postman to expect him to come all the way down and potentially be held up further by stock work/tractors etc.
It works rather well, we’ve never had any issues with it anyway. It is a bit tucked away so I suppose your sort of have to know it was there in order to look but it’s quite deep and lockable so someone up to no good wouldn’t be able to nick anything anyway.
