I can’t beleive he was 80 and still in a rock band. A life well lived and he always seemed like a gentleman, the others will be gutted I’m sure.

He used to live in our village, and was often seen in the village pub. He was a real gentleman, and seemed to have a really happy marriage.

Rest in peace, Charlie.

Charlie Watts was the antithesis of the fame hungry music reality winners of today.

My long gone dad adored him and the Stones and I feel that I’m mourning on behalf of both of us today.

Charlie - you were one class act.

I've just had a cry. I never cry at celebrity deaths. Not Bowie, not Prince, never. I can't believe he's gone. I always had the (I guess childish) idea that the Stones were immortal.

I was saying to my DH only last week that as soon as we could, we must see the Rolling Stones live. Elvis is gone, Chuck Berry is gone, the Doors are gone, the Beatles are gone - the Stones are really the only ones of that kind left. Well, it looks as though we never will see them now. At least not with Charlie.

AutistGoth · 24/08/2021 19:14

I wonder if the Stones will now call it a day.

Good grief! I bloody hope not!

TSSDNCOP · 24/08/2021 19:16

Classy man, great drummer. Thanks Charlie.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/08/2021 19:17

Sorry, @AutistGoth. They'd already arranged to use another drummer for their forthcoming tour. Maybe they'll see how it goes. Keith Richard apparently said once, though, that if Charlie went the Stones was finished (or words to that effect). So, we'll see.

I've been amazed by how upset I am by this. I've known the music of the Rolling Stones all my life. It will go on. Just got She's a Rainbow on now. We've already worked through Paint it Black and Sympathy for the Devil.

Loved Charlie. There was a documentary on a few years ago about the convoluted and often controversial love lives of the Stones, with their many partners. At the end, the commentator said something like " Oh, and we mustn't leave out Charlie Watts - married to the same woman for over 50 years!"

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/08/2021 19:34

I was never a Stones fan but Charlie always seemed like the only adult amongst them.

He marched to the beat of his own drum. RIP Charlie.

Puppylucky · 24/08/2021 19:49

I saw him play at the Jazz Cafe as part of a blues combo. He was tiny!RIP my favourite Stone

Peregrina · 24/08/2021 19:49

The first pop concert I ever went to with my first boyfriend was theirs in 1964 - it seems very much the end of an era now.

maz210 · 24/08/2021 23:10

He was the best of the Stones in my opinion and I'm saying that as a lifelong hardcore Stones fan.

I'm feeling sad tonight, I wasn't young enough to see Brian Jones die so I've been dreading seeing the first of them go.

So glad I got to see him perform live.

KingRoloIV · 24/08/2021 23:19

RIP Charlie xo
Thank You🥰🥰😢

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I guess it's too soon for them to say either way, at this stage.

I did hypothesize to DH earlier if the Rolling Stones will go down the "Trigger's Broom" sort of way, if you understand what I mean. That is, when the originals pass away, they will say "Well we have to keep the band going!" and they will continue with "stand ins." I won't say "replacements." No one could replace the Stones.

Do you, silly as it sounds, I can't help but feel slightly responsible for poor Charlie's passing. When DH and I were discussing that we must see the Stones, he said "Well I know Charlie isn't very well at the moment. We need him to get better again." I replied something to the effect of "Oh don't worry about Charlie. He'll be banging those drums again before we know it. I'll be he'll outlive Keef..."

Well, now look what I've gone and done! Blush I'm sorry, Charlie!

AutistGoth · 24/08/2021 23:35

Sorry about the typos. No excuse except fat, clumsy hands.
