Did anyone in your secondary school ever use the showers?

In American programs, teens are always shown using the showers after PE

I remember never seeing anyone using the showers at my school. At best, they were used for some groups of girls to change in semi privately. At worst, they were completely ignored.

So. Your school?

No the girls were all too insecure to. Even when we got unchanged it was awkward enough with girls laughing at eachother bodies, other girls staring and being rude

Vaselike · 24/08/2021 19:20

Mid 90s. Showered after double PE but not single PE. Communal, about 15 of us naked at a go, with the teacher checking we were cleaning ourselves properly.

I hate the long lasting effects school has had on my body and attitudes to exercise.

daisypond · 24/08/2021 19:23

Yes, it was compulsory- unless you had your period. Communal showers. Late 70s to mid 80s. Horrendous.

Big communal shower and teacher watched us remove towel and use them. It was horrid.

reluctantbrit · 24/08/2021 19:56

Yes. Showers were open stalls and you stripped and showered.

If time was an issue (one PE teacher loved to keep us until it was nearly too late) we just washed up.

Saying that, I am German. The hiding under a towel is totally foreign for me. We all changed in one big room and so far none of us is an exhibitionist.

Lookingoutside · 24/08/2021 19:59

Yes. Forced to undress and then the teacher watched us walk through one by one.

Absolute cunts. Still upsets me.

Azilliondegrees · 24/08/2021 20:03

Yes, ours were in use in the late 90s. I don’t think every lesson, and I remember hating it. PE teacher would stand and hold your towel while you popped in and out one by one. Absolutely futile in terms of washing, totally inefficient. I have no idea why we had to do that.

Pretty sure the boys used theirs more though.

TheBullfinch · 24/08/2021 20:03

No, they were never used because they were open, with no doors and you could see in from the changing room. There was nowhere to put your towel either.

Lovelydovey · 24/08/2021 20:05

Nope. With an hour for PE including changing both ends there really wasn’t time, as well as them being utterly gross.

userxx · 24/08/2021 20:14

Similar to my school. You wouldn't get away with it now.

WiltedDaffs · 24/08/2021 20:16

In one school, yes. Had cubicles and, after our first PE lesson at the school, the PE teacher made us line up, drop our towels and go into a cubicle. Each lesson after that they’d check we were using the showers but didn’t watch us go in. So we all worked out we could fool the teachers and go in with our underwear on under our towels and just wet our legs and shoulders. Later, we realised just one girl going in and running wet footprints around the changing rooms was enough to fool the teachers.

At another school, the showers were a big communal room. No one used them and no one tried to make us.

CheerfulBunny · 24/08/2021 20:27

God, no! Flashback to grotty portacabin with carbolic soap and daddylonglegs.

Lookingoutside · 24/08/2021 20:29

‘Similar to my school. You wouldn't get away with it now.’

Right? You wouldn’t get away with it now. What the fuck was everyone thinking!

drpaddington · 24/08/2021 20:31

Nope never. Never even saw them switched on, I assume they didn't even work? We used it as extra space for getting changed, that wouldn't have happened if there was a chance someone could switch the water on and soak everyone in there!

WeatherwaxLives · 24/08/2021 20:38

Yes. We were made to. Late 90s.

They were a U shape and we were begrudgingly allowed to wear swimming costumes in the shower.

So we'd do PE. Change into swimming costume as fast as possible under our t shirts. Then we were all lined up and we had to walk through the showers, which we would try to do as quickly as possible and avoiding as much water as we could.

PE teacher stood between the 'ends' of the U, and made sure everyone went in, and checked us when we came out to make sure we were wet! if you weren't deemed wet enough you had to go in again.

RuthW · 24/08/2021 20:47

We did at middle school, not at upper school

aprilshowers2015 · 24/08/2021 20:49

Brilliant! Need to RTFT but in the meantime, We had a set of 3 communal showers that were used to store additional PE equipment!

mejon · 24/08/2021 20:50

Yes. Early-mid 80s. Absolutely horrific. They were dark and dank at the far end of the changing room and we'd all have to cram in together, naked. Mortifying. There was another changing room with individual shower cubicles in a row and facing each other - but no curtain, but it was rarely used. Don't know which was worse tbh. I'm delighted that DD has never had to use the showers after her PE lessons.

BrilliantBetty · 24/08/2021 20:51

After swimming we were told we had to. And before swimming come to that.

Occasionally if it was hot weather girls would shower after pe / cross country but not often.

I think the boys used them every time, they'd always come out of pe with wet hair.

This was the naughties.

Felix125 · 24/08/2021 20:53

I wonder if it was more awkward for girls to use communal showers.

After rugby on a freezing cold day when we covered head to foot in mud, the hot showers were a blessing - communal or otherwise

RubyFowler · 24/08/2021 20:54

No, but the boys did.
We must have been stinky really but I don't remember if we actually got much of a work out in PE.

CornishGem1975 · 24/08/2021 20:55

Not once! Not sure they were even in use.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 24/08/2021 21:04

Secondary school in the 90s. The showers were open plan at the end of the main changing room, basically showering on show to the whole room, but like some relic from the past - never used and looked like they probably didn't work. No way in hell would any of us have ever considered using them. Now I read some pp replies it sounds as though they WERE a relic from the past. I'm horrified by the queueing up and being supervised by the PE teacher! No wonder people grow up hating exercise.

MordenLarch · 24/08/2021 21:06

No. At least one of our PE teachers was a massive pervert

WellTidy · 24/08/2021 21:08

Yes, secondary school in late 80s. PE teacher used to keep a register of who had showered and who hadn’t. If you didn’t shower for two weeks in a row, you were asked why in front of the entire two classes of girls.
