When did you start your menopause pause

I'm still breastfeeding, so no periods at the moment, but I was thinking as I'm in my early 40's it probably want be long until I start the menopause. My periods had stretched out to longer cycles before I managed to get pregnant with DC2. Is it generally a start in your forties thing ?

About 46, really heavy and long periods, needed to have a coul fitted and a large polyp on cervix removed. blood tests confirmed peri.
Late 40’s , no periods, terrible night sweats , crying. Then periods came back after 11 months and so did awful moods. So went to doctors, started Ostrogel, no moods, no hot flushes, lovely shiny hair and nice skin etc. Early 50’s, coil out, new one in, now 52 and no periods for about 10 months. I think I’m through it now so have recently halved dose of Oestrogel. Wish me luck.

56 & longing for menopause to arrive, but no such luck!

Leavesofautumn · 13/08/2021 14:17

It's absolutely possible for it to happen at age 40. It's on the young side of average, but not abnormally so.

not at all. I and several of my friends were done by 44/45. Also many posters on the menopause board.
ShinySquirrel · 13/08/2021 14:24

I started peri-menopause symptoms at 35. I'm 37 now and they've really ramped up in the last few months.

I had chemotherapy, so it wouldn't be unusual to have an early menopause.

TrueGrit54 · 13/08/2021 14:28

54 and still having monthly periods, but they often last for 2 weeks. Every month I pray it’s my last one. Age 50 it started with massive hair thinning, achey joints, low libido and general tiredness. No hot flushes though.

ButterflyBitch · 13/08/2021 14:32

@aerosocks

I think 45-52 is about average. But I started peri when I was 38 and formally diagnosed with premature menopause just before my 40th.
What were your symptoms if you don’t mind me asking? My mum was 41 when her periods stopped and I’m 39 now. Have brain fog and am exhausted a lot but periods still regular.
Freshprincess · 13/08/2021 14:34

Missed my first period when I was 44, but looking back had symptoms well before that, mostly palpitations and increasing amount of migraines before my period.

Took me five years to get HRT, after two rounds of anti depressants and lots of ‘it’s just your age/you don’t look that bad/ you’re too young from the GP.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 13/08/2021 14:41

I had a child at 40. Before she was 2 I was done and dusted with periods, and menopause stuff had kicked in big time. I was on HRT 18 months later.

Jerseygirl12 · 13/08/2021 14:47

RuleWithAWoodenFoot you were lucky to have had your daughter. You must feel very blessed

takingmytimeonmyride · 13/08/2021 14:49

I think I might be there now. My periods have gone from 28 day cycles to all over the place 25-40 days. The last two periods have been really long, which is very annoying! I wish they'd just stop. I'm 45 and my periods started when I was 10 so I've long had enough of them. Angry

Not sure about other symptoms, I have anxiety anyway, it doesn't seem any worse. I have had times where I've suddenly got really hot, and get all prickly and itchy with it, but not sweating loads, so not sure if that counts as a hot flush.

FreeBritnee · 13/08/2021 14:51

I think early 50s is normal. I’m still regular and I’m 48. My mum started the menopause around 52, so I’m expecting the same.

Gilead · 13/08/2021 14:53

45/46 had hellish periods but all done and dusted at 47.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/08/2021 14:53

This is not true and peri-menopause can last for over 10 years. My started at 39.
handslikecowstits · 13/08/2021 14:57

I'm 43 and I've noticed changes such as shorter periods, mood swings and increased period pains as if my ovaries are rapidly emptying toothpaste tubes and my insides are being squeezed harder than when I was younger.

The rages are unbelievable. Jenny Eclair said that when she was going through the menopause she could have picked up and thrown a Victorian sideboard from one side of the room to the other. That's me! I'm thinking of taking up weightlifting as I could easily break world records.

On the plus side, I still have nice hair and my joints don't ache. It would be nice however, to not feel murderous towards others.

GoodnightGrandma · 13/08/2021 14:59

43 I suddenly lost a lot of hair. That was the beginning.

DramaAlpaca · 13/08/2021 15:00

I first noticed I was starting perimenopause at 44. I'm not sure when exactly my periods stopped as I got a Mirena coil at 46. Had it out at 54 and in the three years since I've had no periods so I'm definitely done.

SparkyBlue · 13/08/2021 15:07

I think around 41 I really started noticing mood swings and then had a baby at 43 and things never really went back to normal. I can't shift weight around my middle and I lve always been tiny and periods a bit more irregular

Leah2005 · 13/08/2021 15:17

Mine wasn't clear because I had a mirena coil. I had that taken out at 50 and my periods stopped pretty quickly after that. My SIL was about 42. There is a link to how old your DM was when she started hers.
