WHY do people do this - competitive martyrs

I recently had quite major surgery.

Before the op some people were scaring the bejaysus out of me saying things like “oh you’ll be in so much pain and be out of action for months” My MIL in particular was saying how awful I’ll feel.

However, shortly after the op those very same people all changed their tune and it turned in to this weird competition to prove that they recovered much more quickly from surgery than me (or anyone else!).

MIL in particular saying things like “I was cooking a roast dinner for a dozen people and cleaned the whole house 5 days post op” (FIL said this is bollocks as she was in hospital for 7 days Hmm)

Why do people behave this way?! It made me feel shit that I wasn’t able to do more for my kids etc. but then I remember I’m only a couple of weeks post op. My doctor actually told me off for doing too much.

The same with childbirth, some family members claiming to run 10k whilst working 100 hours a week and tandem feeding twins 4 months after birth…. well I may exaggerate but you know what I mean!!

They never used to tell you not to drive after a c section you know. I was driving day after I came home from the hospital. According to 2 relative. Never mind they were in hospital for 3 weeks (imagine) and drugged up to the eyeballs. And according to her husband they only had 1 car so unless she was driving him to work I think not. But my poor sister heard this when she was home 2 days after a section terrified about running out of paracetamol and contemplating walking to the shop. (Obviously we looked after her but I’ll never forget that smug story)

@Mammyofasuperbaby
That’s so awful for you, can’t believe anyone would try and minimise that.

I’m reassured I’m not the only one that this happens to but sorry for all of you that also have to put with this competitive bullshit!

Yeah I know someone who manages better than anyone, while having it harder than anyone. Hmm
These stories are strangely comforting.
