Restaurant portion sizes are huge

Does anyone else find this? Went to a pub/restaurant last night and the portion sizes were insane. I managed a third of my salad, brought the rest home and shared it with DH for lunch today. DD got through half her curry and 6'1" hollow legged DH just about managed to finish his risotto but then felt overstuffed all night.

@PickAChew you greedy bugger

@grasstreeleaf

Yes, they are. And if you look at the calorie counts for pubs and restaurants you can clearly see a main meal portion is more than a lot of people should be eating - basically double a normal portion.
Oh fuck off it’s not every day is it?
Mischance · 31/07/2021 22:36

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius - indeed so. I remember taking my DD and her great strapping boyfriend to a posh place for a meal (I had been given a gift token) and laughing at the look on his face when his "meal" appeared on a large black marble slab with the tiniest little pile of food on the middle. It all vanished in one gulp!!

Rude! Touch a nerve did I?

@PickAChew

I had a piece of cress for my dinner. Probably won't feel hungry again until Monday.
an entire piece?!? I looked at a tic tac yesterday so that's me sorted for the week.

@Deadringer

A salad for one that provided 3 meals. What was it served on, a tractor wheel?
😂

And the thing is they normalise oversized portions. I know because I fell foul f it. It wasn't until I got a FitBit and started investigating the nutritional content of everything I realised. No wonder I had got overweight. Not any longer though. Smile

I’m agog that you brought your left over salad home!

9 chips with my fish and chips in a restaurant today. Stacked 3 x 3. And one medium sized piece of fish. I was initially raging but was actually satisfied after eating it. Obviously i also finished the kids food AND ordered a dessert. But the finer the dining, the less food you get in my experience.

Also I've been served enormous Caesar salads in restaurants. I'd never not finish it but the sauce can be heavy and with the cheese and croutons it's filling.

Only if eating out is normal. It is a rare treat for us.
FloralJammies · 31/07/2021 22:45

And this puts a spin on MN chicken. Now we have MN salad 😂. How many meals can you stretch a massive MN salad...

Nuggetnugget · 31/07/2021 22:48

I think this is a joke thread surely 🐛
You took home an unfinished salad from a meal and it did you and dh for lunch today

I agree that eating out is normally a treat. A larger portion every now and again at a restaurant is fine. Doesn’t mean you have to recreate it every night at home. Confused

grasstreeleaf · 31/07/2021 22:49

I only used to eat out once a week but the more you see that kind of portion the more you think it is normal. I had to re-educate myself. Halved my portions and added in more salad/green veg to fill up the plate a bit more, now I'm used to eating like this and anything else seems too big/ not enough veg. Habit forms the basis of a lot of food choices.

FizziWater · 31/07/2021 22:50

A salad is not a meal IMO. It's something you have with a meal.
Do people really bring home leftovers?

PurpleDaisies · 31/07/2021 22:51

Eating out one a week is not rare.

LadyDanburysCane · 31/07/2021 22:51

Portion sizes are definitely out of control. We rarely eat out because it’s just too much food! Not competitive under eating at all but when we go on holiday (self catering) we tend to have ready meals (it is a holiday) and a ready meal for two easily fills me, DH and adult DS. Charlie Bingham meals seem to be a sensible two person size though.

grasstreeleaf · 31/07/2021 22:51

No, you don't have to but it can catch you unawares. Is that so confusing?

badg3r · 31/07/2021 22:52

In the OP's defence, I once ordered a ploughman's salad which came, and I am not joking, with an entire big block of cheddar like you would buy at the supermarket on it. I swear it was around 350g of cheese 😂

NopeNotGonna · 31/07/2021 22:52

You're all gluttonous monsters. I had a quick swipe along the tongue with a grape last June and I can't move for feeling stuffed.

I would not be bringing home salad. It will have been out all through the meal then on the journey home. Salad should be kept chilled.

I might request a pizza box if there’s enough pizza to take but other than that I don’t like leftovers. Once a meal out is over I don’t want to be eating it again after.

Kokosrieksts · 31/07/2021 22:54

No, I cannot feed the whole city with a half of a leftover potato. I find portion sizes spot on most of the time.

Helenluvsrob · 31/07/2021 22:54

Agree with the less food for more money theory 😂

Really excellent meals we’ve had that come under “ pricey but worth it “ in my brain ( eg last summer a delicious set lunch at rogan &co cartmell) have portions that are on the small side of perfect. So you can have 3 courses and coffee and feel just the right amount of full.

Yes it is. How can you be ‘caught unawares’ recreating a huge meal you had in a restaurant at home. Confused
