How well can a five year old draw?

LanisHouseLot · 29/07/2021 19:34

My youngest has stood out from my others from a young age in terms of drawing, and now at just turned 5 I keep finding myself bowled over at how good their pictures are. Some other skills, possibly more important ones, are definitely lagging behind but the drawing skills seem to be racing ahead in spite of still clutching the pencil in a fist to draw with! I think covid plays a part, as there have been so many days sitting at home with not much to do, so out comes the paper and pencils.

It dawned on me that I don't really know how well most 5 year olds draw, and can only compare to my previous children at that age. Do I have rose-tinted mum-goggles on and they're actually pretty average? Grin This picture was just handed to me - it appears to be a whale, a shark and a dolphin playing in a band, with 2 children (possibly dancing?).

If you know lots of 5 year olds, would this rank as pretty good or somewhere more in the middle? It doesn't matter to me either way, I'm just curious!

Wow they’re incredible!! I’m 31 and can’t draw half as good as that!!

Hill1991 · 29/07/2021 20:55

Your ds can draw better than I can or ever would be able to

Bunnycat101 · 29/07/2021 20:55

Massively better than my 5yo and 29/30 of her class (I’ve seen lots of work pictures). There is one child in my daughter’s class who is as awesome as your child. The drawings from her just standout as looking brilliant and are better than what I could do. Some children just seen to be very talented.

Bloody awesome!!! My 4yo is basically still stoned looking blobs with eyes level. You guys got talent!

PabloSlow · 29/07/2021 20:59

Make sure they're on the gifted and talented register at school. That's great for an 8 year old, never mind (just) 5!

Caspianberg · 29/07/2021 21:04

They are great!
Mine is younger, he currently just eats the crayon, haven’t actually made it to the paper yet.

These are excellent op. My ds is 18 now but was copying Scooby Doo DVD covers from the age of 3.5~4 and excelled in art throughout school. He got a grade 9 at GCSE 2 years ago and then took it for A level. By the end of the first month he had dropped it for media studies as had “fell out of love with it” and I won’t pretend I wasn’t gutted but of course was supportive.

Ds has Aspergers and his attention to detail is scary. I would encourage your ds to make a portfolio as I did this with my ds. It’s in his room somewhere and some of the pics are hilarious.
Your son has a natural talent and will go far with it. I recommend getting him some really good quality pens ( maybe for Christmas or birthday as they’re quite expensive ) and date as many pictures as possible.
We’ve had a good laugh looking back at some of them over the years and it’s nice to know how old he was when he drew them.

Violinist64 · 29/07/2021 21:10

These are amazing. Very talented. The detail and imagination are outstanding for his age.

2bazookas · 29/07/2021 21:10

Pretty average IM E

BadlydoneHelen · 29/07/2021 21:12

They're obviously not average as you must knowHmm

misssunshine4040 · 29/07/2021 21:15

Wow this is amazing my 15 year can't draw like this neither can I! My 21 year old is super talented at art and drawing and she didn't produce work like this at 5 either

minipie · 29/07/2021 21:16

Wow, these drawings are amazing for a 5 year old. Surely their teacher must have commented?

3luckystars · 29/07/2021 21:17

Gifted. They are really good.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 29/07/2021 21:18

Fabulous drawing 👏

Whinge · 29/07/2021 21:19

@2bazookas

Pretty average IM E
Absolutely nothing average about them at all. The precision and detail is very unusual in a just turned 5 year old, even more so as the Ops child has such a poor pencil grip.
Twokitstwokats · 29/07/2021 21:20

It's really good OP! My 5 year old is good at drawing. It was mentioned in her school report. But not that good!

Musication · 29/07/2021 21:20

@User5827372728 I think you’re very beautiful. Red and beautiful Smile

OP even more than the skill I love the imagination. Shark disco. I mean I’d probably avoid the venue as I’ve an irrational fear of sharks but those 2 do look quite chilled tbh

Maggiesfarm · 29/07/2021 21:23

That is smashing! She certainly has a flare.

I was very good at drawing from an early age, my mother kept a scrapbook of things I did. My kids were not so, didn't matter of course, we all have different gifts.

Your girl's drawing rocks.

legalseagull · 29/07/2021 21:27

They're amazing OP. Very talented. I'm trying to encourage my DD too. She's 3 and has shown a real skill from just turning two.

She has language delay so I LOVE that she can express herself. This is her 'nana'. I was amazed for a 3 year old

My DD drew this at 5 1/2 and I think she had a real flair at that age. Sadly it hasn't amounted to much. But your child has excellent draftsmanship and pencil control.

My almost 5 year old can’t draw at all. Can just about do lines and circles but nothing that resembles anything!

TulipVictory · 29/07/2021 21:32

Op - your DC is definitely talented!!
I was drawing obsessed as a child and left it for the next 30 years). I’m still above average at drawing. Not art school good but I didn’t practice. Keep them at it, because it’s an absolutely wonderful skill!!
