Working on my thesis which is folklore based and keep seeing various versions of the Grey Lady myth pop up.

Does your area have one, and if so, what is it? 😁

One in Durham castle is supposedly a wife of a 19th century bishop who fell to her death from its top most heights

QuestionableMouse · 28/07/2021 20:06

@Curioushorse

OP, what's your thesis in? Or, if that's too specific- what's your subject area? I'm nosy and can't work out what subject would be ok with this really interesting topic!
It's folklore of the North East 😁

I came on to say the only one I've heard of is the Oxney Bottom Grey Lady but was beaten to it. All the local children growing up knew stories of this ghost

Thanks!

And think there's one in Kidwelly Castle in Carmarthenshire.

Chislehurst Caves in Kent has a ghost which is reputedly a bride murdered by husband on her wedding day. Apparently she's a White Lady though.

(I find ghost myths fascinating. Good luck with your project)

Notgotanyidea · 28/07/2021 20:14

A Girls Catholic High School in Surrey has one too.

Pogostemon · 28/07/2021 20:15

There’s a Green Lady at Wemyss Castle.

Tittyhill · 28/07/2021 20:15

Oatlands Park Hotel in Surrey has a grey lady, something about jumping from the Bell Tower after a lovers tiff.

Hensintheskirting · 28/07/2021 20:18

Tunbridge Wells has a Grey Lady bar, it's above a restaurant in the Pantiles, which is the old part of town, and is so called because of a grey lady who actually haunts the property next door to it. The story (as far as I remember) was that she was the madam of the brothel which was there in the 1700s and is forever looking out of the window for one of her girls who went missing never to be found.

beastlyslumber · 28/07/2021 20:20

Yes, Warley Woods is haunted by a grey lady.

DuckonaBike · 28/07/2021 20:21

Yes, there was one near where I grew up, Ladywalk Wood near Rickmansworth. I think her husband had murdered her. Of course it’s possible that the name Ladywalk Wood had a different origin and the ghost story was applied retrospectively.

HoobleDooble · 28/07/2021 20:22

Yes, our school (formerly a private Manor House) was suppose to have one. The story was that she fell down the stairs in the main building and died there.

Rapidash · 28/07/2021 20:26

tywysoges · 28/07/2021 20:26

Oooh there are two ladies in castles near me but they’re not grey Grin - blue lady at Dunraven Castle and white lady at Ogmore Castle, she even features on its Wikipedia page.

ShadowKitty · 28/07/2021 20:31

York Theatre Royal is supposed to have a Grey Lady. It was built on a medieval hospital or something. If you're doing myths in the North East you'll have probably already covered York - lots to go at I think from the ghost angle. I've heard of a story of a barghest in the snickleways too...

YanTanTethera123 · 28/07/2021 20:39

There was supposedly one in St George’s hospital at Hyde Park Corner (now the Lanesborough Hotel). As a student nurse, first night duty , the senior nurse told me all about her and I spent the next 10 nights pretty nervous! Allegedly she’d appear just before someone died. It was a creepy ward anyway, very long Nightingale ward, odd niches and corners at one end. And a rattling lift from the basement.

WildRunner · 28/07/2021 20:40

We have a Grey Lady who's supposed to haunt our street. Been here 18 years and never seen her though...

AustinPowerful · 28/07/2021 20:40

C wing of Shrewsbury prison has a 'grey lady'. It's where the BBC series Time was filmed. There's some ghost Hunter type videos from there if you Google it.

It's a former prison so you can go and visit - such an interesting place and there's definitely a strange feeling on c wing!

Treesinthewind · 28/07/2021 20:43

Grew up in Northumberland and grey ladies were a regular feature of primary school scare stories!

Charliebradbury · 28/07/2021 20:49

Where I grew up there is the story of a ghostly woman who is seen floating across the pond in a local woods. Many say she is the ghost of Lady Blantyre who lived on the estate.

TheVolturi · 28/07/2021 20:53

We have a white lady story, she apparently haunts Samlesbury Hall near where I grew up. Used to be terrified when my parents drove past there! My dm actually says she saw her...

Waitwhat23 · 28/07/2021 21:01

Where I grew up, there is a white lady legend. The local laird was stabbed to death by his lover after an argument, she was beheaded for the crime, and her ghost haunts the local doocot.

sqirrelfriends · 28/07/2021 21:03

@TheWindOnTheMoon

Interesting question. Have heard rumours of one a few miles from us at an old medieval manor house that used to belong to the actress Vivien Leigh & her first husband in the 1930s.
@TheWindOnTheMoon was that Notley? I stayed there for a wedding and got majorly creeped out.

Hampton Court Palace, close to where we live now, has a grey lady, aka Sybil Penn. Sybil was servant to four Tudor monarchs, wet nurse to Edward VI and died of smallpox in the 16th century.

Langley Castle, close to where I grew up in Northumberland, has a grey lady too. Think they’re currently a bit confused as to who she might have been…
