Macaroni cheese

What sides do you serve with it? I can’t stand the stuff and never really serve it. But I have guests including dc, one of whom apparently adores it. So I’m going to do one. I’m not worried about that at all, I make a good cheese sauce and am under strict instructions to make it extra cheesy! However I just can’t get my head round what you are meant to serve with it. To me it screams for veg, maybe grilled tomatoes and mushrooms? Or peas? I did think salad to keep it light but can’t get past the through of gloopy cheese sauce getting on my leaves! I like the idea of leeks but not very summery.
Should I do garlic bread? Do I need to add any more carb, it’s stodgy enough as it is?
I fear I’m over thinking this!

Green salad . And put some pancetta in as well.

Scarby9 · 26/07/2021 22:21

Bacon and grlled tomatoes

shivermetimbers77 · 26/07/2021 22:25

A tomato salad: with very good tomatoes and a balsamic dressing. There MUST also be a generous splash of Worcestershire sauce in the macaroni cheese.

If it's a side dish we have it with something like sausages or gammon plus peas/bean/broccoli.

Or if it's the main part of the meal, I do it more like a pasta bake with tuna and sometimes sweetcorn mixed in, and sliced tomatoes and more grated cheese on the top.

JustMeAndWheatley · 26/07/2021 22:42

Green salad

DameFanny · 26/07/2021 22:48

I have to say, if people think macaroni cheese is too carby and needs something else - maybe macaroni cheese isn't for you.

Cookerhood · 26/07/2021 22:50

I love macaroni cheese. Sadly my family are heathens & don't.

Marzipanfruit · 26/07/2021 22:50

Beetroot. And it has to be made with a certain Scottish brand of macaroni or it just isn't the same!

ninja · 26/07/2021 22:50

I really like it with ratatouille

Egghead68 · 26/07/2021 22:53

I like it with caponata too.

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 26/07/2021 22:54

I put smoked bacon, caramelised onion and tomato ketchup through it. Maybe some garlic bread on the side. Pure comfort food.

gogohm · 26/07/2021 22:55

I put cauliflower into it (hybrid Mac and cauliflower cheese) and top with sliced tomatoes

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 26/07/2021 22:56

We have it as a side to slow cooked brisket beef, and with spring greens.

I like it when it’s quite stodgy and you can cut it up into squares.

doublejabbed · 26/07/2021 22:57

Pulled pork ❤️

DammedifIdo · 26/07/2021 23:03

Check out the my fussy eater website. She has a couple of hidden veg recipes so you can tuck them in there. It's healthier and still feels like a treat. I serve with salad/veg sticks for little ones and garlic bread. I was on the fence as it sounded too rich until I tried these recipes

I just wanted to say how refreshing it is to hear it called Macaroni Cheese rather than Mac and Cheese ...

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/07/2021 23:58

Cauliflower, cooked al dente. Maybe broccoli too.

Even better as a cauli/mac combo, with extra cheese and breadcrumbs on top, and whacked under the grill.

Yes!
olidora63 · 27/07/2021 00:01

I always combine leek and bacon with cauliflower cheese .

IonaLeg · 27/07/2021 00:06

Peas, chopped tinned tomatoes and garlic bread in this house. Sometimes grilled tomatoes instead of tinned.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/07/2021 06:26

Put ham, mushrooms and broccoli in the dish and tomatoes, cheese and breadcrumbs on top. But check what they're expecting as some people will expect the macaroni and cheese sauce and nothing else.

Serve with green salad and garlic bread. Don't understand this aversion to foods touching. I love a macaroni cheese, pasta bake or lasagna on top of a pile of lettuce.

tothelakes · 27/07/2021 06:29

Mine has Gouda, mozzarella and Parmesan and panko breadcrumbs on the top. Sometimes I'll add some crispy cubed chorizo or crispy bacon on the side.
Sometimes sliced tomatoes on the top.
I don't really bother with serving anything else with it but American places would have fried chicken, burgers, other fried things.
Yes to garlic bread.
You could do sliders with it.

dudsville · 27/07/2021 06:30

Steam a nice mix of broccoli, carrot, spinach, peas. Roast tomatoes and mushrooms. Mmmm.

tothelakes · 27/07/2021 06:30

My local burger place does truffle Mac and cheese which is amazing.

purplesequins · 27/07/2021 06:31

we rarely serve sides with it. when I make it i add s lot of veg to the dish.
maybe a sald?
