Favourite London Bus Route?

I appreciate this is niche.

Reminiscing about when I had no money and a baby that loved being on the bus. Could take the 38 from almost outside my hackney flat, with him in the carrier. Sit on the top deck and go to the west end all the way to Victoria and back.

More recently I've been a fan of the 15.

@reallyworriedjobhunter

The 274 would take me from my flat near Camden Square to the back door of Selfridges. Not that I have ever shopped there.

The 29 was once accurately described by Alexi Sale as a riot on wheels.

Ah man, the N29 was wild.

Saw the title and came on to say the 38. I lived in Islington and my best friend lived in Hackney then moved to Victoria, so that was the perfect bus route for us.

actiongirl1978 · 26/07/2021 19:57

Number 14 all the way to Putney Heath. Extra points for an old routemaster I could hop on and off outside my flat.

PumpkinKlNG · 26/07/2021 19:58

I use to love the 53 too! Use to go right up to Camden back in the day to London zoo! Now they’ve cut it right back it doesn’t even cross Westminster bridge anymore 😒

Another vote for the 25. Feel quite nostalgic now, not been on that route in years.

fluffiphlox · 26/07/2021 20:02

The old number 10. The old 30. 73.

DameAlyson · 26/07/2021 20:04

Not buses, but one thing I regret that I never did was the old North London Line, all the way from Kew to North Woolwich. It doesn't do that any more.

It was old slam door trains. Goodness knows how long it would have taken.

Blackcountryexile · 26/07/2021 20:07

Not a Londoner but recently enjoyed journeys on the 11 and 14. It was great to see Westminster, Piccadilly and Kensington after more than a year away.

HerBigChance · 26/07/2021 20:07

The 328 from Golders Green to Chelsea - mooches through West Hampstead, Kilburn and Bayswater. Great route.

The 19 I used to get from Finsbury Park through Angel, Bloomsbury, Piccadilly and then on to Battersea.

The 94, already mentioned, is another lovely route through Holland Park and then Chiswick. The 27 goes there too (Chalk Farm, Baker Street, Paddington and then on out west).

I used to spend ages on the buses when I had very little money and they're a great way to piece London together above ground. You just don't get the same perspective from the tube.

usedtobeboss3 · 26/07/2021 20:14

The old 137, when it was a routemaster and used to run all the way from Crystal Palace to Oxford Circus.

twilightcafe · 26/07/2021 20:16

The 25/N98 was my favourite as a teenager. From home to 'Up West and back again at any hour of the day or night.

Superseded by the 52 which took me from adult home to my mates, local drinking spots, Portobello market and my places of work in Kensington and later Victoria.
Nightmarenextdoor · 26/07/2021 20:18

I used to love the way you could hop on the back of the old Routemasters and ride along on the platform, it felt so daring!

doubleshotespresso · 26/07/2021 20:21

159 -15-137-89

Great memories of all journeys on the above

HerBigChance · 26/07/2021 20:22

I loved that too @Nightmarenextdoor

Someone mentioned the number 10: I remember when that started back at Hammersmith, but it's been shortened now.

RubyFakeLips · 26/07/2021 20:23

Old Routemasters were the bees knees, watching my brother fall off one was one of the funnies moments of my life.

You could occasionally still get one on the 15 route but they've retired it now.

Used to do Victoria to the Aldwych was that the 11?
And West Hampstead to Oxford Street.
My memory for the numbers is letting me down sorry.
All old routemasters. With conductors and everything. Ah happy memories.

OneMillionSteps · 26/07/2021 20:27

65 from Kingston-Ham-Richmond-Kew-Ealing Broadway

Svalberg · 26/07/2021 20:28

57, through the posh parts of Kingston

WhileMyMeringueGentlyWeeps · 26/07/2021 20:38

The bus to West Hampstead went by Abbey Road Studios in the days before millions of people were photographing each other on the crossing. It started at West Hampstead where I would often buy some cheesecake at the baker by the bus stop. Sigh.

I went out to see the last Old Routemaster on the 159 route.* It was quite the occasion I seem to remember.

*I'm not this tragic in real life normally.

I got the 24 from Camden down to Millbank recently. It went via Trafalgar Square & past Downing St. I felt like a proper tourist and had to stop myself shouting ‘fuck off Boris!’ Grin

Thecazelets · 26/07/2021 20:47

Number 19 from Islington to Chelsea was always my happy place in my twenties. Was a old fashioned Routemaster in those days.

TableNiner · 26/07/2021 20:52

W3 gives a pretty special view over London from Alexandra Palace.

So many of the old routes have changed. I used to get a Routemaster (22) to school and jump off it whilst it waited to turn right when I wanted to go left.
