@SeigneurLapindeGrantham

It was dreadful and felt rushed. Hitchcock version is unsurpassed.
I don’t disagree but Diana Rigg was a brilliant Mrs Danvers

Watch it for the glamorous mrs van houpen, who you I couldn’t quite place where I had seen her before, when I realised I was 😱

It misses the point spectacularly. Read the book. Watch the Hitchcock film and the earlier tv version. This is poor. Glad I watched it on Netflix and didn't pay to see it in cinema, I would have been miffed and disappointed.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/07/2021 07:41

Haven’t seen that one, but a former remake - IIRC with Emilia Fox - had nothing like the atmosphere of the old B&W one. That Mrs Danvers was wonderfully evil, in that quietly menacing way.

BTW I thought Lily James was v good in Darkest Hour.

I agree with the post earlier that said Lily J was far too glamorous in the role. I found it disappointing.

Buckleyourseatbelt · 25/07/2021 08:10

Started it, but it didn’t grab me.

Didn’t know any of that stuff about Armie.

It was lovely to look at but rubbish. The book is fantastic, and I like the Hitchcock version even though censors at the time meant he had to change the ending. Laurence Olivier as Maxim is so hot.

Can't see Lily James as the second Mrs De Winter. Joan Fontaine, directed by Hitchcock, did a marvellous job. See pictures attached - JF with Laurence Olivier in Rebecca looking believably like a young ingenue, JF glammed up during her Hollywood prime, JF with her sister Olivia de Havilland, both giving a masterclass of how to age naturally and still look beautiful.

Everyone knows the definitive Mrs Danvers is the Hitchcock Danvers. Played by Judith Anderson. I've never known who the actress was, had to look it up. Odd that she owned that role so completely but few of us seem to know her name.

Buggerthebotox · 25/07/2021 09:31

Just watching the 1979 version on YouTube with Jetrmy Brett. I remember seeing it at the time but haven't seen it since. Joanna David is believable as the second Mrs de Winter. Funny that David's daughter Emilia Fox also played the character in a later version of Rebecca.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/07/2021 09:36

She was also excellent in Laura, classic film noir. Well worth seeking out if you haven't seen it.

Thanks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g. I'm always on the lookout for a good noir.

I think the Hitch version of Rebecca will always be the definitive one.
