Gutted. Mini break spoiled.

I'm gutted. 3 months ago we booked a 2 night stay at a Michelin star restaurant and hotel for my birthday later in the year. It was a dinner, bed and breakfast rate and dinner at the Michelin star restaurant included in the price plus a reservation made at their other restaurant for the other nights stay.

I emailed today to ask what time the reservations were as we wanted to plan some activities in the day time and they've responded saying they are really sorry but someone made a mistake and didn't make the reservation for either restaurant when the booking was made and now they are full.

We can switch to a bed and breakfast rate, but there aren't really any restaurants within walking distance (it's a small village in Cumbria so taxis are very hit and miss) so it would spoil the break a little as one of us would have to drive. We can't move the date as we have 2 young children and only get child care very infrequently.

I'm just a bit gutted. Was really looking forward to it. I've had a look and there's very little availability elsewhere for our dates. Certainly nothing of the same caliber and all much more expensive now.

Just having a rant really!

Start with 1863. It is wonderful.

So I have a reservation at 1863 for the Saturday night! Yay.

Thanks everyone.

I'm still going to try and get the original place to give us a table but it's good to have a highly recommend back up.

If this isn't sorted fully, to your satisfaction, this hotel includes a Michelin restaurant. Would this work?

Looks lovely. I'll put it on the list for the future- they don't have our dates available unfortunately.

The Drunken Duck is excellent too, though more gastropubby than fine dining.

Unavailable for our dates, I'd already looked!

Oh no, that's a shame - but do go back another time! If you stay there you can get spa passes for the Langdale, too Smile

Sorry, but the people saying a newer booking should be canceled? I know this sucks for the OP but why should somebody else's weekend be ruined for the restaurant's mistake?

Yes this! Imagine being in the receiving end of this! They need to sort it, but not like that.

Sounds like you’ve sorted it OP. I’d still complain or leave a bad review.

Also worth a look at Yanwath Gate.

I'm surprised the restaurant aren't overbooking anyway, with the amount of pinging going on. So many places are having a lot of cancellations on the day that they are operating with spare tables most nights.

Sorry your birthday has been ruined…I have to say the arrogance of some of these fancy hotels etc amazes me. You’d probably get better service at premier inn 😆

Glad you're sorted OP! I have sent you a PM by the way.

Why not try The Old Stamp House restaurant in Ambleside? Michelin starred and in a beautiful place. I live in the Lakes and there's plenty of excellent places to eat x hth

Hipping Hall near Kirkby Lonsdale is fab! 3 rosette I think. Chef Olly was runner up in Masterchef Professionals. His Pine Apple dessert which he did for Chefs Table was absolutely beautiful x

Askham Hall gets a lot of wedding bookings for the amazing food.

It's not Holbeck Ghyll is it, OP? They lost their Michelin rating and the hotel has gone downhill recently. If it is, you've had a lucky escape.

They should bounce a later dinner-only reservation.

As others have said this is terrible customer service really and a newer booking should be cancelled and put on a reserve list. You need to speak to someone there as it is bad when you are staying because of the food, not eating because you want to stay there. Glad you have managed to find one place.

Also second @Kiki275 reccomendation of Hipping Hall - absolutely fantastic menu (and team).

Is ulverston too far for food? The tapas place there is amazing. Not normal crappy tapas.
