Empty supermarket shelves?

Bookaholic73 · 20/07/2021 19:37

Is anyone else seeing more and more empty shelves at their local supermarket?

I went shopping at Morrison’s today and there were so many empty or almost empty shelves!

Does anyone know why?

It’s not like pandemic levels, obviously, but I’ve also noticed it in other supermarkets recently.

@prettyLittlefool

Mine is fully stocked. Think this is a bit of a non issue. Some people just want panic drama. Biscuit
It’s definitely not a non-issue here, but maybe it is in your area.

Morrisons had no water or pull-ups in ds size.
I had an Iceland delivery earlier just stuff for a kids party and half the order is out of stock.
I'm going to need to go out to get everything I need or just order pizza on the day.

Noticed some empty shelves here in Scotland too. Anything to do with the heat and lorries etc? Not sure!

Just to add my tuppence worth and create more panic to the thread - haven't noticed any shortages 🤷

Manista · 20/07/2021 20:55

There was a big discussion on the local FB page late on Saturday because someone had been to Asda and there was - shock horror - no coleslaw and they were very short of salad!
A lady knowledgeably came on to say her son worked at Asda and it was all down to shortages due to Brexit.
When I suggested that the salad shelves pretty much always get stripped on sunny weekends because people go mad for BBQ's it was completely ignored.

UberMullet · 20/07/2021 20:58

It's very well reported that there is big shortage of lorry drivers. This is Brexit and not Covid and not hot weather as Europe is not having this problem.

willowstar · 20/07/2021 21:54

This was my local Tesco on Sunday. There was a sign up to say fresh deliveries were cancelled due to shortage of drivers.

There are a lot of issues at the moment mainly lack of drivers throughout the supply process. Couple that with brexit/Suez delays and lots of self isolating causing staff shortages a lot of stores are seeing shortages

Just to comment on the previous poster saying stores are keeping stock back to prevent panic buying, that's rubbish. If the stores have the stock it'll be on the shelf as soon as they are able too, I don't know of any business that doesn't prioritise off-sales.
We are audited frequently and ranked on offsales so it would only negatively affect us to keep stock off the shelves, our warehouse is surprisingly small too so no space for hiding stock Grin

theliverpoolone · 20/07/2021 22:30

Yes, my Sainsbury's has had hardly any cat food pouches for the last week - they've only got the kitten or senior ones Hmm

Preech · 20/07/2021 22:34

I haven't noticed huge rows of empty shelving in northeast Scotland, but I have seen more empty pockets here and there than there were after the pandemic panic buying calmed down.

Some news here. Among other things, Brexit is definitely part of the problem.

@onceivepostedidontcomeback

It's simply to stop people stocking up when there's no need to!
Empty shelves cause people to panic buy what's left. You need one bag of pasta, plenty on the shelves and you buy the one you need, only a few left and you buy two or three in case there is none next week.

I haven’t been able to get bread rolls for weeks and have tried several supermarkets….admittedly it’s gluten free bread I need but it’s not been done to stop people stocking up. There’s nothing there!
PicsInRed · 20/07/2021 22:39

One was sold out 99c special deals and the other was heavily purchased (but still available) bottled water in a grievous heatwave.

That's not panic buying, it's buying.

PicsInRed · 20/07/2021 22:42

Of course, I'm sure the "pingdemic" Hmm Grin is an issue too at some locations.

Comedycook · 20/07/2021 22:44

I went to the supermarket today ..no juice or juice cartons...so bloody annoying

Comedycook · 20/07/2021 22:44

No bleach either

QueSeraSarah · 20/07/2021 22:46

The massive tesco near me had empty fruit and vegetable shelves on Saturday. Had to get my lettuce from the co-op!

sanityisamyth · 20/07/2021 22:47

Haven't been in a supermarket for a while as I have a weekly delivery slot but I've noticed an increase in substitutions and things just not being available. Nothing major though. Just got 24 loo rolls so life is still ok!!

FuckingHateRats · 20/07/2021 22:47

Just in the ice-lolly section!

properg · 20/07/2021 22:50

Do empty shelves cause this? I don't think oh I need a years supply of pasta so I better stock up when I see empty shelves.

snoresnoresnorezz · 20/07/2021 22:52

A family members works at a wholesalers and they have been warned about impending food shortages and price hikes. This is because of no pickers to get food from the fields it's rotting g in the ground. The. With all the trouble with people having to isolate etc not enough drivers doing deliveries etc.

Elverybaby · 20/07/2021 22:55

Empty shelves in our local supermarket today because the heat makes the shop busier and more staff are calling in sick (going to the beach?) so restocking is taking longer.

BrutusMcDogface · 20/07/2021 22:56

I’ve been to Morrison’s twice this week and once last week, and there have been NO WRAPS WHATSOEVER. As in, tortilla wraps, and none, not even in the Mexican food aisle. I assumed it was a brexit thing.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 20/07/2021 22:58

I've found the wraps thing too! For ages, there have been no wholemeal wraps in the shops here.

noblegiraffe · 20/07/2021 22:59

Lady at the checkout in Sainsbury’s said she’d seen nothing like it before, deliveries that were due just weren’t arriving. She said a mix of covid and Brexit meaning a lack of delivery drivers.
