Can I put domestos in the washing machine?

My machine stinks. I’ve been trying to trace the smell and discovered it coming from the drum (clothes smell ok, so I thought it was something else)

I’ve tried a cleaner (twice), plus hot washes. I think the problem is that the machine is used almost constantly, but only ever on low temperature washes, apart from towels.

Google says that I can use bleach and I asked dh to buy some when he went shopping. He’s come back with domestos…

You don’t need to wash clothes at 60, it will damage some of them, but if you do all your towels and bedding at 60 every time it should be enough to keep the machine from stinking.

For now use a small amount of bleach on a very hot wash for a few cycles. Should solve it.

White vinegar is found with other vinegars. Will probably say distilled white malt vinegar. Soda crystals are in a bag near the laundry powders/vanish products.

Use powder not liquid. Clean out the dispenser drawer and the bit it fits into. Do the odd hot wash rather than always at low temperatures. Try a laundry sanitiser or zoflora in the wash to get rid of smells

Does it not have a drum clean option on it? That and keeping the door open unless it's in use is enough to keep mine clean and fresh smelling. Only ever had a bit of smell coming from
It when I'd lobbed a wet tea towel inside it and forgot it was in there. I used the small dettol washing machine cleaner which is good. Pricey though I think it's around £7 for a small bottle but you put all but a tiny bit into the draw and then mix the left over with some water and use that to clean inside the draw if it has clogged on powder. Then just set the machine to the instructions on the bottle. I think I did mine on the drum clean option and the smell went after that

I found that by keeping the door shut I now never ever get mould.

Open up the filter which hopefully should be on the bottom right hand side.

Put down a towel and something to catch any water in. Just turn the cover and pull out any bits and give the filter a clean

So far today, I have done a 90˚ Wash with cleaner. Cleaned the seals again.

Now, I’m doing another 90˚ Wash with domestos. I’ve paused it once and will do again.,,

Did you remove the drawer and clean it and the bit the drawer fits into? The roof bit can go a bit mouldy

Domestos is fine, I've used it in my machine, don't bung in half a bottle though!

KarlMaldensNose · 20/07/2021 17:29

Sounds as though it’s going to be the cleanest washing machine in the world 🙂

tanstaafl · 20/07/2021 17:38

Or maybe it’s not the machine after all?
Have you dragged/slid it out to check for water or sludge ?

Coffeemakesmehappy · 20/07/2021 17:48

Check that the drain outside isn’t blocked! I had the same problem once, drain was blocked with leaves and outlet pipe was submerged in dirty water (which I think was backing up into the machine). Cleared it and rank smell went immediately.

as a pp said, towels, bedding, anything cotton gets 60 and then the rest gets a 40 unless it's well grubby.

More or less anything that's not woolly or one of dh's precious Red Torpedo t shirts gets 60.

I recycle everything else though to make up for my 60 degree World Killing habits
