Raspberries.
This morning I'm having raspberries on my breakfast, and the scent of them is wonderful! They take me back to being a girl and playing with my cousin in her garden. Her mum my aunt, had many raspberry bushes in there, and when they were ripe cousin and I would pick a few and eat them in the 'hidey den' under the tree in the corner.

Those summer days with the tent out, dressing up, and nibbling on those dusky - smelling fruits, all washed down with pretend tea (orange juice) from a play cup and saucer. I can see it now.

@BumCat - you can still get Happy. I’m wearing it today! It’s my favourite.

ThatOtherPoster · 14/07/2021 11:17

My childhood ones are tomatoes and Nitromorse. 😆 Mum and Dad had greenhouses full of tomatoes and their smell now takes me right back. And Nitromorse - they bought a doer-upper house when I was about 3 or 4. Mum renovated it by herself while Dad worked away. We were constantly kept out of certain rooms because the floorboards were missing or the ceiling was off. 😆 Nitromorse takes me RIGHT back.

As an adult now, I love love love decorating.

HotHointheavo · 14/07/2021 11:23

soft light brown sugar.

Whenever I smell it I have the urge to have it on hot buttered toast - for many years I didnt know why! I talked to Mum about it and it was a childhood snack (in the days before healthy eating ruled) given to me by my Nana. Now it doesnt just give me the urge it gives me lovely memories of an amazing lady.

CrazyBaubles · 14/07/2021 11:28

There is a very specific mix of smells together that take me straight back to my nans house. It's a mix of roast dinner (always a cheap cut of pork roasting and veg being boiled) mixed with freshly cut mint which my grandad grew in the garden and something else, I think freshly cut grass.
I've started growing mint myself and had this exact mix of smells a few weeks ago. Roast was on, DH was doing the lawn and I was cutting mint to make sauce then bam, straight back to Sunday's at my nans, playing with my cousins, being kicked out into the garden out of the way, having to wait for your 'sitting' because we couldn't all fit around the table at once. Nostalgic, lovely but bittersweet.

The smell of Eternity perfume and hairspray takes me back to being a teen. My mum used to wear it and I used to steal it when I was going somewhere..

I love it when a smell brings you a memory you haven't thought about in a long time.

Blackcurrant leaves and warm rainy soil is my grandad's garden. If I smell Body Shop tea tree I'm 15 again and looking round town with my best friend, going for tea and scones because we thought it was fancyGrin

Mmm yes, tomatoes have a sort of earthy smell don't they - can't beat fresh ones!

Do you even work as a decorator?

'Lovely but bittersweet' - that sums up many memory smells doesn't it!

That's because it WAS fancy - hope your scones were of the jam and cream variety?

Another one of mine is from another aunt who, for my birthdays ALWAYS bought me perfume from the Avon catalogue. They were usually in jars and the most memorable one was Moonwind. I can smell it now, and see us, all sitting around in the living room, and mum constantly refreshing the teapot and juice jug.

I love seeing blossom on trees as it reminds me of being in infant school. At playtimes in the summer we were allowed to play on the grass, which wasn't normally allowed and there was always lots of blossom. It reminds me of a time in life where I didn't have a care in the world and was just really happy.

NoviceGardenLady · 14/07/2021 12:40

Cleaning the kitchen with Dettol just after cooking gives a mix of antiseptic with a slight hint of onion which transports me right back to the little clothes shop where my mum used to buy my knock-off school uniform.

Whiffs of cheap men's aftershave sends me back to being 17 when I was going out with a guy who wore Virgin Vie Envy

NoviceGardenLady · 14/07/2021 12:41

Oh and I recently went mad in Home Bargains and bought loads of the old school Impulse flavours. PE changing rooms circa 1998-2001 here we come...

LysistrataVickers · 14/07/2021 12:41

Summer scent memory for me is courgettes. It's rare I smell the particular smell as it was the warm vegetable having just been picked when helping my uncle in his farm in the summer holidays (back in the 80s when summer holidays were years long and walk to wall sunshine 😁). Nowadays obvs their all plastic wrapped and refrigerated within an inch of their lives but if I'm able to get some fresh organic courgettes then I give the stalk a good sniff and it takes me right back to being 9 years old in a massive sun baked field of them! Bliss.

MyFloorIsLava · 14/07/2021 12:44

Construction sites.

My dad was a plasterer, so when I got a big hug from him in his work clothes there was a particular mix of fresh plaster tinged with a bit of cigarette smoke and man sweat. When I walk past anywhere that building work is being done I can smell the same smell and for a second I'm a little girl getting a big warm comforting daddy hug again Smile

Scarby9 · 14/07/2021 12:51

@LepusLepus
Do you remember the advert for that shampoo? They used to sponsor programmes on pirate radio late evening that I used to listen to secretly under the bedclothes. I still sing the song at intervals...

Alberto VO5
Brings your hair alive
And leaves hair shiny, shiny, shiny
As an apple
Oh yeah.
With that crazy apple smell,
VO5 cleans extra well,
And leaves hair shiny, shiny, shiny
As an apple.

3Britnee · 14/07/2021 13:06

I can't choose, and I probably lost the apple one, the coconut one broke (the pots were glass with plastic lids).

purrswhileheeats · 14/07/2021 13:13

I love the smell of the grass verges being cut by the council. I live in an arid country now so don't often get to enjoy it these days but when we get the first rainfall after a long, hot summer... OMG 🤩

BumCat · 14/07/2021 13:15

@ThatOtherPoster I got a whiff of it on someone the other day when they walked past! My brains linked it so much to the past, maybe I should get some and give it some new memories! Grin

@LepusLepus I’m fine! Just a LOT happened in my 17th year.

suckingonchillidogs · 14/07/2021 13:20

Sawdust and swarfega remind me of my dads shed. Creosote takes me back to warm summer afternoons at my grandparents where Grandad always seemed to be creosoting their back fence

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/07/2021 13:40

Wood shavings and yacht varnish take me back to the 1970's watching my dad create toys from offcuts of wood.

I also have a sound that takes me back to a similar era. It's the sound of metal rigging wires tapping against metal sailing masts. Takes me right back to my holidays in Salcombe.
