My glasses upset the dog

For starters- I don't have a dog, don't know the first thing about them, don't love them, don't hate them, live and let live.

We've got new neighbours, they have a dog, smallish, lots of hair. The dog seems to mainly be outside all day with the neighbours around and in and out the house, it looks perfectly happy to be there, mainly lying in its basket by the doorstep or sniffing around.

Every single fucking time I step out of my front door it barks at me like a maniac, running up to the fence, throwing itself off the fence like a mad thing, barking it's head off like it wants to eat me. It's tiny, I know it won't eat me but it makes me jump every time and irritates the hell out of me. I'm just walking out my door and down my path in a perfectly normal way.

I finally said to my new neighbour "wow, your dog really doesn't like me, ha ha" and she said, very seriously "He doesn't like people wearing glasses. They really upset him. If you didn't have your glasses on he wouldn't bark at you. He doesn't do it to upset you, he's very stressed by glasses."

Luckily my bus was just coming down the road so I just sort of laughed and said Oh right, there's my bus".

Seriously? Is this a thing with dogs? Either I am not very knowledgeable about the ways of dogs or my new neighbour and her dog are a bit odd.

I once had a dog that was scared of bananas.

DaisyDreaming · 05/07/2021 22:36

I’m reassured by this post that we weren’t the only people with a racist dog. We were so scared people would think the dog reflected our views! Some animals are also scared by sunglasses as they either see them as giant eyes or feel they can’t see the eyes both of which freak them out. Our dog (rescue) was also scared of a few things, we think she was abused which is why she was so scared of things like big sticks

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 05/07/2021 22:38

My dog was scared of rain.

We had a JRT who was utterly unfazed by fireworks, guns, cows, next door’s gigantic dog which used to bark at him to make him jump. He was petrified of me hanging the washing out to the point where he’d have to go and hide under the sofa if he even saw the washing basket. So weird.

TacoSunday · 05/07/2021 22:44

Also, how on earth does the owner walk the dog? People in glasses are everywhere Confused
@Paq

The word vet but not the actual vet

I love this.

Mine is terrified of the vet, but they always give her a biscuit. She has a 5 second break from being scared to thoroughly enjoy eating it, and then reverts to tail-between-legs, trying-to-hide-in-my-jumper-levels of petrified. It's absurd.
Mine is scared of the word vet and the actual vet. We took to spelling it out when it came up in conversation: V E T (anyone who read the Mog books to their kids might recognise that too!) That was fine for a while but now he’s worked out what V E T means too 😂

Our GSD does not care for pigeons. He was a bit suspicious of all birds when we first got him but there are sooooo many sparrows and starlings about and he loves to sit in the garden he just spies on them now, BUT if he sees a pigeon on the roof he will get giddy and do a giant woof.

He's barked less than a dozen times since we got him in October and I'd say seven of those have been at the dangerous deadly evil pigeons

He's really funny with the smaller birds, he lies on his outdoor blankie really still and only moves his head...sometimes so far back he rolls/falls over, and then gets a bit embarrassed if we laugh.

TheFoundations · 05/07/2021 22:46

@DaisyDreaming

Mine was ok after we went to visit a friend in Hackney and spent the day walking round. Such a strong black community. I think the dog just realised that her feelings weren't really acceptable, and gave up.

Bobsyauncle · 05/07/2021 22:47

My dog is scared of hi vis(except dh wearing it)
Also scared of her own coat(it is hi vis though). Might be more embarrassment than fear.
The vacuum
The broom
Brollies
Christmas

Bobsyauncle · 05/07/2021 22:48

And she is racist

What kind of a sadist are you - buying a dog a hi-vi coat when they are scared of hi-vis? Were you thinking that she wouldn't be able to see it when she had it on?!
StormcloakNord · 05/07/2021 22:51

One of my dogs is horribly racist. Barks and gets scared of black people - it's absolutely mortifying I can't explain how embarrassing it is.

The other one has a bit of an issue with feet. Can't blame him for that, really, but he really doesn't like it when you wiggle your toes & will scream at you until you put socks on.

DoTheNextRightThing · 05/07/2021 22:55

Yeah. Dogs have this thing where if a certain person or thing spooks them, they'll associated anyone or anything resembling it. My childhood dog hated anyone wearing high vis jackets because a work man scared him once.

1happyhippie · 05/07/2021 22:55

Mines scared of balloons, the lawn mower and apparently the wind!
She runs back in the house if the wind is blowing plants/trees in the garden.
She also shakes when people cough.

MoiraNotRuby · 05/07/2021 22:56

My dog has recently turned against magpies. And when he encountered a windmill decided if he barked and growled enough it would move away. It didn't.

warmfluffytowels · 05/07/2021 23:05

Yep - dogs are proper oddballs Grin

I walk dogs who are scared of the following:

Cable ties
Sandbags
Black dogs
Cows
Gates
Getting in cars (but not being in them or getting out of them)
Puppies
Bin lorries
Masks pulled down over the chin
People splashing in puddles

hellsbellswithcherryontop · 05/07/2021 23:39

ddog i had as a teenager hated motorbike helmets, afriend put one down onnthe coffee table, ddog came into the room and attacked it

hellsbellswithcherryontop · 05/07/2021 23:40

also anything with wheels

hellsbellswithcherryontop · 05/07/2021 23:41

Stormcloak we have a cat who hates black cats, any black catGrin

Meggymoo777 · 05/07/2021 23:43

My mums dog hates masks... if I go down to her level to rub her she'll try to bite it off... very stressed by them! Also stresses me as she's a (very lovable, friendly) Staffy with massive jaws!!! 🙈

noblegreenk · 05/07/2021 23:48

Dogs can be frightened of strange things. My dog is terrified of balls and also freaks out when leaves blow around in the wind! Taking her for walks in autumn can be a nightmare and if it's a dry breezy day then there's no point in taking her out. She just freezes when the leaves start blowing around and I have to call my husband to come and collect us in the car (she's a big dog) as she won't walk home.

FuckUcuntychops · 05/07/2021 23:48

There’s a dog on YouTube that’s scared of a picture of Julia Roberts.
My mums dog was scared of bananas and any songs by Queen. He’d run under the bed if you played Bohemian Rapsody.

raisinbean · 06/07/2021 00:19

Mines scared of frogs and pigs. Any other farm animals are fine, horses, cows, sheep, goats, chickens you name it, all ok but he's petrified of pigs and runs away from them. Frogs he just stops and won't walk past one and waits for you to pick him up Hmm

Wimpund21 · 06/07/2021 00:25

I can believe its possible.

My mums dog is terrified of hats/any headgear.

It doesn't matter what it is. A baseball cap. Beanie hat. A larger/noticable headband. Dc3 popping on his fireman helmet. A plastic, toy tiara.

She goes berserk. She's clearly terrified but also appears very aggressive and barks, bears teeth, cowers but lunges if you get too close. Remove the offending article and its like turning a switch - instant calm and she's wagging her tail and approaching you in seconds.

None of us know why!

joystir59 · 06/07/2021 00:34

Dogs are potty. Mine doesn't like food blenders, electric can openers, Hoovers, Hi Vis jackets, anyone other than him getting in the car (not that he can drive, so that's tricky), people hugging, people crying, anyone saying hello to him when they arrive at the house, anyone leaving the house.
