Has anyone had their second dose Moderna?

Hello, I am due to have my second dose Moderna vaccine soon, but I suffer from health anxiety so I am feeling quite nervous about it. I think this is partly because all my friends and family have had either AZ or Pfizer, so there's alot of information on those, but I don't know anyone besides myself who has had Moderna. It would help me if I could hear experiences in terms of side effects from anyone who has had both doses of Moderna.

Just to add that after my first dose Moderna I had to stay at the vaccination centre for an additional 15 minutes, as I had the sensation of a tightening feeling in my left jaw and left side of my neck (I had the jab in my left arm), this resolved completely within around 45 minutes, then a few hours later I had a very sore arm, fatigue, mild nausea and a swollen lymph node under the armpit on the 5th day after the vaccine, a rash on the underside of the arm and armpit where I had the vaccine, feeling light headed and also a short spell of dizziness. All these side effects resolved by the 10th day post vaccination.

Having read that the second dose Moderna can produce stronger side effects has triggered my health anxiety, so any reassurance would be greatly appreciated. I hope there is someone out there who has had their second Moderna and had a positive experience, although I know people react differently. I really want to have my second dose for maximum protection for myself and others around me, but I don't want to feel so fearful.

Also, there are 11 weeks between my first dose and second dose. Is anyone aware of how this interval affects the efficacy of the vaccine? I have read that a longer interval is better for AZ vaccine, but can't find any similar information for Moderna.

Thank you!

I had a sore arm after both jabs and had swollen lymph nodes about a week later. I felt exhausted the evening after the second jab and had a few temperature spikes and felt a bit chilled. I was a bit tired with the mildest of headaches (about a 1/10 on the pain side), and a bit tired and achy the next day. You'll be fine Smile If you prefer to wait for 30 mins again this time, no one will mind Flowers

I had my 2nd moderna jab yesterday. No side effects other than a sore arm after my first but this one has floored me!
Have been running a fever since 10pm last night, which paracetamol is hardly touching, have aches and pains and constant nauseous and vomiting 🤢 fingers crossed I’m out the other side in the next few hours!

Bump

Due my second today and having major collywobbles (also a health anxiety sufferer).

Any more stories of how it went?

@MrsValiant and @Meltinthemiddle How are you feeling now? Hope your side effects did not last long!

Vanityfairest · 19/07/2021 10:28

I had my second moderna last week, I got the sore arm but it wasn’t as bad as after the first, a bit of a headache and woke up feeling hot/cold on the first night. By day 2 I was fine again.

MrsValiant · 19/07/2021 13:10

I felt absolutely fine by Wednesday morning. Still felt a bit rough on the Tuesday, but not bad enough to stop me working

EpitomeOfIndifference · 19/07/2021 13:13

I had no side effects at all after the first vaccine. The evening of my second dose of vaccine (I did have Pfizer first, then Moderna so not exactly like you) and the following day I experienced:

  • fever of 102 F
  • muscle aches
  • chills
  • sore arm
  • fatigue

I slept from 12pm-4pm and then 9pm-10am the day/night after my second dose but after that was totally fine. Not even ‘fuzzy’, tired or sore the following day. It was not a pleasant 36 hours but it was very short lived. The relief I feel to have had both doses far outweighs the side effects I had.

My friend had her 2nd Moderna injection and suffered very similar side effects. She knew I was going on holiday so messaged me to tell me that I may want to reschedule as didn't want me going on holiday feeling crap.

Due to being exceptionally needle-phobic, I wasn't changing my appointment, I have to mentally prepare myself so much for any needle related thing, I just wanted it over and done with so got it done.

Yes to the sore arm..... ever so slight headache - shivers for 30 mins and even then, it was probably more due to us camping and the temperature dropping so not sure it was 100% linked to the vaccine.

Honestly - no issue at all, I had a brilliant holiday, even more so knowing I don't have to have another injection for months Smile

My husband's had his last night - he's suffering normal levels of man flu I'd say, he's still working but under a blanket and is generally feeling sorry for himself.

Ibuprofen is helping a lot - he's pretty much ok after having one of those. I think he's having the same level of symptoms as for his first- no worse I don't think.

I hope you start to feel a bit of relief once you've gotten it out of the way.

My Dad and inlaws had theirs a while ago, didn't have any side effects at all apart from MIL who had a slightly sore arm for about 24 hours. They are all 70+ though, apparently older people don't get as many side effects.

burtiebotts · 19/07/2021 15:59

I had my second dose on Saturday morning, and started feeling achy with a headache about 8 hours later - then started with a fever, aches and chills and couldn't sleep that night. Still felt very rubbish the next day with a fever, and spent the morning in bed - but started feeling better by late afternoon. (and paracetamol seemed to help bring the fever down) - so was a rough 36 hours, but definitely better after that.

Today, 48 hours on, my arm now had a red patch on it which is hot to the touch and slightly swollen, and still running a slight fever (although this heatwave is maybe also contributing to that!) - but I feel much much better than yesterday, and have been able to carry on with wfh etc as normal.

I only had a sore arm with the first dose, so this one was a bit worse, but it didn't last long in the grand scheme of things.

aibusux2u · 19/07/2021 20:44

Thank you everybody.

I had my jab at 4:30 so I am 4 hours in. Very sore arm. Waiting to see what happens next...! Will update so that others can see this in future.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 19/07/2021 20:48

I woke up at 2am with full on flu symptoms. Chills, shivering then that gave way to a raging temperature and aching back and headache.

I couldn't get off the sofa until about lunch time and hadn't slept all night.

That was 3 weeks ago and was fine after 2-3 days.

I don't know what you want from this.

Either you'll react or you won't and if you do you'll still survive. This is just going to wind you up.

aibusux2u · 21/07/2021 10:06

@allCrouchEndTiger12 Thanks for sharing. What I wanted was to hear people's experiences. It helps me to prepare. Fine if it would wind you up to do the same, but for me, it helps.

An update for anybody who finds it useful: I just had a sore arm for the rest of day 1. Overnight I could not sleep at all - not sure why. Around 12 hours after the jab, at 4-5am, I started to get chills and aches and a fever. Yesterday was a total write-off! Had no energy, a fever, headache, muscle aches, felt wobbly whenever I stood up, had bad pain in my arm and armpit. DH was the same, but about 8 hours behind me in terms of developing fever, and no armpit pain.

Another restless night and today he is back to feeling 95% and I am feeling much better but still a bit fuzzy and with the armpit and arm pain. Am hoping this is the worst of it done with! For me I think the worst "symptom" has been insomnia as I have essentially missed 2 nights' sleep so I am shattered! ;-)

I had my second dose Moderna at 10.50am yesterday. I was fine all of yesterday. I had a bit of a heavy head at night and soreness around the vaccination site, but this morning at 7.15am, I started having chills and then a fever. The fever was initially 37.6 and then I took paracetamol which brought the temperature down and thereafter my temperature increased at 3pm this afternoon up to 38.2 degrees. I took a couple of paracetamol. This time it took two hours for the fever to come back down to 37.7 degrees. I have now taken an Ibuprofen tablet too.

I have felt very tired all day and have been between the bed and sofa all day. It is now 5.15pm, so lets see how it goes from here.

Just an update on my side effects. My temperature returned to normal at 9pm and stayed normal overnight. It is now 45 hours since I had the second jab. I am still fever free this morning
(and since 34 hours post vaccine), but I do still feel very lethargic and since yesterday evening, I have a sore and swollen armpit lymph node on the vaccine side.

I had my second dose on a Friday, had a fever and felt like the flu for about a day afterwards. Bit of a sore arm and feeling tired for a few days afterwards, but was fine by the following weekend. No lasting side effects several weeks on, no COVID either after getting on a plane. I’ll give Moderna 4 stars ;)
