Dd1 (11) has just said 'mummy you know how you don't like it when people say ATM machine??? Because the M is for machine?? Well what about baby chick? Chick is the baby version of chicken so you are just saying oh look a baby baby!'

She's right. Any more like this?

SausageRoll
🤣
he's funny

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/06/2021 23:06

not a saying, but there's no such thing as decaffeinated coffee. (well, not commonly speaking)
decaf still has some caf in it, so it's reduced caf, not caf free!!

spaceghetto · 21/06/2021 23:07

Days get longer in the summer.
There are 365 days in the year - what about the nights?
A day is classed as 24 hours but this doesn't include the night.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/06/2021 23:07

"common sense"

that's an oxymoron if I've ever seen one😁

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/06/2021 23:09

"subzero freezer"

aren't they all???

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/06/2021 23:09

"friendly fire"

it isn't

Mysterian · 21/06/2021 23:13

The place: Glendale Valley.

Glen meaning valley, Dale meaning valley...

L0bstersLass · 21/06/2021 23:18

@0blio

'Very unique' annoys me, something is either unique or it's not.
Yes!! That's what I came to say.

Also, something that used to make sense but doesn't any more...
The camera never lies. You reckon?! A pre-photoshop phrase where you could believe a photograph.

Holyfacemask · 21/06/2021 23:19

@GreenTeaPingPong I was once told by a gentleman in broken English to ‘gather all my necessaries’ which I thought was a rather lovely way of saying ‘get all your shit and get out’ 😂

Couchbettato · 22/06/2021 00:03

Slept like a baby - so I assume you were up every 2 hours looking for breasts?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/06/2021 00:10

he's funny

Oh, he's amazing - and one of the very few truly funny ones who's also family-friendly, as an added bonus.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/06/2021 00:20

All of these examples of what New Scientist calls (deliberately) RAS Syndrome - 'Repeated Acronym Syndrome Syndrome' reminded me of the old but still funny (imho) joke about the sign outside the fishmonger's:

"Fresh Fish Sold Here Today"

Then somebody comes along and says:
"Well, you aren't going to be selling rotten fish, are you, so the 'fresh' can be crossed out straightaway";
The FM crosses it out to leave 'Fish Sold Here Today'.
"And you're open for business now - of course it's available today - so you can cross out the 'today'";
The FM crosses it out to leave 'Fish Sold Here'.
"Oh, and you don't need the 'here' either - it's obvious where your shop is, why would you be advertising a rival fish shop?!";
The FM crosses it out to leave 'Fish Sold'.
"And you're a shop - a business - it's crystal clear that you're selling it and not giving it away, so cross out the 'sold'";
The FM crosses it out to leave 'Fish'.
"In fact, you're obviously a fishmonger. Everybody knows what fishmongers sell - your goods are there plain as day to see in your window, so....!"

Anordinarymum · 22/06/2021 00:44

Paragon of virtue. Just paragon will do
Angry people who say they are incandescent with rage. Just the one word is enough

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/06/2021 00:46

@Mysterian

I love this one!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/06/2021 00:48

"full fat Coke...oh you know what I mean"

I don't know how common this is but DH isn't the only one who's said it.
yes, I know you mean not sugar-free, but would it be hard to say "regular"?!

00100001 · 22/06/2021 07:23

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

You'd hate our family.
its
Red Coke/full zoom coke (coca cola)
Silver coke (diet coke)
Manly Coke (coke zero)
And fun free Coke. (Caffeine free diet coke - gold tin)

@00100001

nah, I don't mind nicknames

PopsicleHustler · 22/06/2021 07:40

I turned around and said....And then she turned turned around and said...

So two people stood having an argument or a conversation basically spinning around

Bananalanacake · 22/06/2021 08:33

'I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy' yes I fucking would, nasty bitch.

CaptainCallisto · 22/06/2021 11:40

Chocoholic/workaholic etc. An alcoholic is called that because they are addicted to alcohol. The hol is the end of alcohol; it doesn't mean addicted to!

Likewise anything vaguely scandalous being called something-gate. The Nixon thing was called the Watergate scandal because it happened at The Watergate hotel - gate doesn't mean scandal!

NannyGythaOgg · 22/06/2021 12:06

'Hence why': Hence is enough on it's own; meaning 'that's why'.

River Avon - Avon means river.

LolaSmiles · 22/06/2021 12:08

Some of these are brilliant and I'd never noticed them.
Thank you for giving me more minor annoyances in lifeGrin

That's just how language works though and how new words are made. We know gate doesn't mean scandal and we know hol is from alcohol...that's missing the point entirely. The thread is about sayings that don't make sense, but these make perfect sense.
Thethingswedoforlove · 22/06/2021 12:42

Cheap at half the price is definitely the saying in common usage and it does make precisely no sense. I have thought it Wd make sense if it were cheap at twice the price but people just don’t say that…

Holyfacemask · 22/06/2021 12:56

Americans exclaim they could care less has always puzzled me. Well crack on then!
