What does a reception starter need for school?

We’ve just had our welcome pack for DS for school as he starts in September. It talks about uniform and PE kit and the school provides a book bag.

What else will he need? Do they have things like a pencil case when they are this little? Does he need a rucksack as well or will the book bag do?

He’ll start off on school dinners so he doesn’t need a lunchbox.

Thank you!

Mine are KS1.

They take a book bag with a snack and drink (and reading/homework). It ferries home crumbs, sticks, art work, random stuff etc too.

They have wellies and waterproofs in school, and wear PE on PE days.

School sent out a list of what they needed.

They do get school fruit although appear to need a snack too…they might die without copious amounts of food 🙄

He might have accidents to start with, but they understand. And they'll also remind them lots etc. Plus it isn't a big loo in reception, they're still kiddy toilets.

@MoverOfPaper

I don’t think he’ll need pencils or a rucksack. The school book bag tends to fit nicely in the ubiquitous school trays and a rucksack would be too big. Schools provide pencils these days. Maybe PE pumps or trainers but for reception they may just do bare foot in the hall. By the time they’ve all got their shoes off and trainers on it’s the end of the lesson! Maybe a named water bottle but some schools say you have to have a school one because 268 water bottles that all look exactly the same I’d the sensible option...
I think normally most school except reception to get changed for PE. In non covid times DD’s school takes reception swimming.

DD has to take a morning snack and school fruit an afternoon snack.

Does he need forest school clothing?

I like stamptastic stamp for labelling clothes.

I think the standard is PE kit in a drawstring bag (but as others have said at the moment most are going dressed in PE kit), book bag and water bottle. That's it at our school, but I'd check your school prospectus as I know friends DC has to take their own wellies to leave at school and other bits.

They do forest school but I think they provide them with everything. We’re not in a well-off area by any means so the school seem to go out of their way to provide as much as possible, which is amazing. Looking forward to getting involved and working out how we can support them. Showed DS a picture of his classroom and the outdoor play area and he was super excited so that bodes well!

I would definitely ask the school. A water bottle is almost certain, but my children did Reception at different schools and needed different things. My eldest needed an all-in-one waterproof kept at school, as well as trainers to play on the school field and wellies. My youngest just needed wellies.
