Martin & Jackie Goodman

We’re currently rewatching Friday Night Dinner (bitter-sweet) and have realised that Martin & Jackie’s jobs are never mentioned.

What do you imagine them doing? I see Jackie as a secretary/PA or doctor’s receptionist and Martin as some sort of engineer although my DH thinks he’d be an accountant.

Any other suggestions?

Well it is Friday night!

I always think that Martin is some kind of super-confident genius in his field outside the house, in an obscure highly qualified job that pays very well.

I think Jackie has possibly taken on part-time jobs occasionally since the boys were born (hence the need for Jibby the Au Pair) and she's possibly been back to college several times for her various obsessions, but never quite turned anything into a career.

Jim probably has a fortune under his bed, possibly inherited, as I feel he's lived in that house next door all his life, and his family may once have been well to do but slowly come down in the world in terms of status, now he's living off the last of the family fortune, quite comfortably, making strange renovations to the house. Which I think might be quite a surprise inside, not hoarded apart from expensive items that belonged to the family in grander days, weirdly spotless and quite modern.

I'd say Jackie is a counsellor and Martin works in some kind of logistics role.

Or they do Webcam work Mon-Thurs - bit of nippy nippy.

Martin- clearly a geography teacher.
Jackie- SAHM but volunteered in a charity shop a few times a week once her boys started secondary school.

Incidentally, I realised lately that Paul Ritter was only about 45 when the series started. Always assumed Martin was retired, but maybe not!
