Oil light on car

Me and DH are having a row about the oil light on the car. The light has come on today indicating that the oil needs changing asap. I want him to try and get it into our little local garage tomorrow to do it because I have a 100 mile round trip to take DM to hospital on Thursday. He's telling me it's just an advisory and it'll be fine. I'm not so sure. The book says to get it sorted immediately, which to me means it would probably be fine for a few very local miles until we get a chance to get it done but not to go on a longish journey. This is the first decent car we have had and I don't want to bugger it up! Who is right?

@Bamoon

I would do it as soon as you can, it can invalidate your insurance as well.
I'm smiling at the driver ringing up the insurance company to report the car being stolen and them asking if the oil light was on and then refusing to pay the claim as the insurance was invalid Grin

It's a Suzuki Vitara. Have just googled and it seems that the oil needs changing every 7500 miles so given it's now on 14200 this would seem about right and account for the light. We haven't had it from brand new so didn't encounter this at the first 7500 miles.

*Well it seems your options are:
1.
YOU get the car into the garage and take some ownership over the issue.
2.
Change the oil yourself or ask your oh to.
3.
You take the car and risk ruining the engine.

Ultimately, you're the one that needs the car, so you should be sorting the issue. Given you paid for it and refer to it as "your" car, it is your issue to sort.*

I'm quite happy to sort it out but unfortunately DH takes the car to work so I cannot get it fixed tomorrow. He has spoken to our local mechanic and will drop it in tomorrow and ask his advice. Regardless we/I will get it done in the next few days.

My friends car had the orange light. Her husband insisted it was OK to drive. Then it went red and now the car is fucked.

I've not read all replies bit sometimes it can be an indication the hand brake is on!
