Is Darlington nice for a weekend away?

We are looking for somewhere to go for a long weekend and fancy a nice town rather than a large city. It will just be dp and I and we were thinking about staying in a travel lodge type place in the centre. We fancy strolling through nice streets, having drinks in a bar or two with a nice view and a meal out

So does Darlington fit the bill and if not are there any other suggestions? We will be coming from the South Yorkshire area and don't want a mammoth journey if possible

So is

@PeckyOwl

Seriously there's someone on here recommending Durham Wetherspoons?!Confused. Agree that Durham's an afternoon at best to look round the cathedral - the town centre itself has gone to rack & ruin. Yarm's just a load of chain pubs now. God I feel old. Go to Harrogate or Skipton.
That was me. Thought the op mentioning staying in a Travel Lodge meant they might want budget friendly

I mentioned Spoons in the same sentence as a champagne bar - you might know the op personally but I dont. Hence both suggestions. Get over yourself!

Thank you everyone. I think we are going to do Harrogate because we can visit Knaresborough at the same time which also looks lovely. Also its only an hour drive whereas Durham is double that

Have a lovely time! Knaresborough is so pretty. You can walk between them if feeling energetic (might be a bit hot though).

@colouringcrayons thank you Smile If the walk is along the river that might be lovely

I like going to Darlo for the odd overnight for work, it's compact and had a couple of good chip shops. Couldn't say I would think of it for a weekend away though.

Yarm
Durham
Harrogate
Northallerton
Richmond
York
Newcastle

I would say any of the above over Darlington

Knareborough is lovely. We had a fab day there last summer, went to Mother Skipton's Cave, lunch in the open air at Marigolds followed by an afternoon rowing on the river. Bliss.

Not really, you just cross it. I have only done half the walk myself so not sure if it is all nice, do your research carefully in case you end up in a bull field or something - I don't want to ruin your weekend Grin
