Talk to me about Kefir!

I’m trying to lose weight and eat better for health reasons so I’ve been making overnight oats for breakfast with Greek yoghurt.
I suffer IBS and get blocked up so I’ve bought some Yeo valley Kefir instead as I’ve heard it helps!
I’m confused about whether you just add it straight to the oats or if you need to add milk to create a “reaction” to get the probiotics going?

I’ve googled and there’s no much information it’s overwhelming!

I’ve tried coconut water before because the celebrities swore by them for hangovers, it was awful so that’ll teach me for reading trashy mags Hmm
I’ve not tried coconut milk yet but I like coconut oil so not against the flavour and imagine it’s much better for you than the dairy one

The pancakes on their own are pretty healthy - eggs, flour, kefir. But it's the stuff you have with them that adds the calories - cream, bacon, fruit, maple syrup 😂

I buy mine from the 24 hour Turkish shop up the road. If you have any sort of European grocery it'll be a lot cheaper there.

That sounds right up my street, thank you!
I convince myself honey is healthy because bees make it.... Grin

Aldi do Kefir, on offer at 69p from 89p per 350gram tub, I think it's more 'fizzy' than Yeo Valley. groceries.aldi.co.uk/en-GB/p-brooklea-natural-kefir-yogurt-350g/4088600343686
Natural, Mango+Passionfruit, or Strawberry.

Having read the ingredients, I saw it has sugar in it, but so does Yeo Valley.

Well I put the Yeo valley in my overnight oats and there was definitely no fizz! I tasted a bit and just tasted like a stronger Greek yoghurt

Thanks for the reccomendations!

I quite enjoy it and also by it from the eastern Europe section of Tesco. Can also recommend Dr Jenna Macciochi on Instagram for learning about guts, microbiome etcetera.

I can recommend Chuckling Goat kefir from a farm in Wales- they are really knowledgeable and can ask any questions you have about it.

I have been drinking it for about 2 years now and my IBS symptoms have virtually disappeared, very occasionally get a flare up if especially stressed or eating badly. I first heard about them on a TV documentary and can honestly say it’s changed my life- I used to get so bloated and be in so much pain that I literally couldn’t get my clothes on to go to work (aside from the pain they wouldn’t fit!)- this stopped within about a month of being on a kefir regime but I understand it has to be the strong stuff to really make a difference. Not going to lie though, it tastes awful! I mix it with frozen fruit into a smoothie and that helps disguise the taste.

^answer any questions, not ask! Sorry am tired

QioiioiioQ · 02/06/2021 00:01

I've always made my own

Reloxa · 02/06/2021 08:34

I like it in smoothies with some fruit, spinach and avocado. Not so keen on it plain. I get it in the Polish section.

BikeRunSki · 02/06/2021 08:39

The Yeo Valley stuff, you eat like yoghurt. If you live in S/W Yorkshire, I would happily give you some of my kefir grains to culture.

CornishTiger · 02/06/2021 08:43

My IBS which played me from early teens - about 20 years or so was mostly resolved by Kefir a few years back. Used Biona kefir from health food shop. A friend once described it as cottage cheese with sprite! It’s still my preferred one but good supermarkets have options too now.

CornishTiger · 02/06/2021 08:43

I’m rubbish at growing my old but I need to try again!

CornishTiger · 02/06/2021 08:44

*own

PeteWicksSexyPirate · 02/06/2021 12:41

Well I ate the oats about 2 hours ago and so far not had the dramatic reaction I was hoping for 🤣 going for a walk at lunch time so I hope that’s not risky!

I will try the other brands you guys have suggested, the Yeo valley wasn’t fizzy which I guess that is the difference between the live ones maybe?

@CornishTiger glad it’s working for you!! IBS sucks

The commercially available products are only pale imitations of the real thing!

kittycrackles · 02/06/2021 12:55

why woukld anyone buy kefir when it is very cheap and easy to make? Much rather have fresh stuff with no additives.

QioiioiioQ · 03/06/2021 17:20

I'm sure the commercial stuff is healthy with no additives, it's just not the 'real thing'
(the real thing isnt commercially viable)
