John Lewis vs Amazon?

Boring one, apologies!

The scenario: say you’re ordering a pricy tech item.

Amazon (sold by them directly) has it cheapest. John Lewis charges 15% more, but have an additional year of warranty of course. This could very well be useful - I’m actually ordering this item to replace my current one which is faulty.

Would you order from John Lewis for their extended guarantee; or would you go for the cheaper price at Amazon & rely on their generally good customer service?

John Lewis. I trust them and don't want any more actual shops to close down.

JL have been great for me. Had to send back expensive headphones just before Christmas that went faulty within the 2 yr warranty period. They sent them off to Sony, who couldn't fix and they got replaced with the next model up, since my model had been discontinued. Were also great at replacing a faulty Bluetooth speaker.
I would also second looking at ao.com. They are prompt with delivery and have some good offers. Have had loads of things from there with no issue.

John Lewis’ customer service is shit. I only use them now for stuff I can’t get anywhere else namely DD’s school uniform and they can barely manage that. Amazon have pretty good customer service- I had a faulty electrical item recently and they were easy to contact, they sent a courier to pick it up the next day and delivered a replacement. Meanwhile I had to do a credit card chargeback after JL refused to deal with my oven that exploded after only a few months and stuff I ordered around Christmas wasn’t delivered for weeks. Amazon over JL any day especially if they’re cheaper. But I’ve also had great experiences with AO- they’re definitely worth checking too.

I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with JL not long ago, amazon for me hands down, something went wrong with a tech product and I got a replacement the next day and just told to send the other back within 14 days.

HalzTangz · 28/05/2021 07:47

I would buy from Amazon then take extended warranty out with the manufacturer, you will probably find this works out cheaper than the extra 15% you'll pay at John lewis

Except John Lewis are closing down a lot of their shops to trade online

Amazon customer service has been excellent In m experience

Hence applause for @WowOoo for supporting quality jobs in a company that pays taxes in the UK.

I received the worst customer experience with JL, never again. They got the order wrong twice and refused to refund me (even when they had collected it, twice) until the item was received in their warehouse
Had to wait for £100s to be refunded, so couldn't look elsewhere as I had no money in my account to buy anything

slalomsuki · 28/05/2021 09:01

Definitely John Lewis for tech. Their extra year warranty has been invaluable and they even got Apple to replace a phone for us when they initially refused.

Wouldn't go anywhere else now

OldTinHat · 28/05/2021 09:30

Pay with a credit card and buy from Amazon. You'll save money and have protection from your cc.

Moonface123 · 28/05/2021 09:51

Amazon every time. I order from them more than anywhere else , so convieniant, and never had a problem.
John Lewis has had its day.

AlwaysLatte · 28/05/2021 09:56

We always go with John Lewis for expensive tech type items. 2 rather than 1 year warranty and better customer service.

Pinuporc · 28/05/2021 10:22

Amazon customer service is outstanding in my experience. John Lewis used to be great but I’m increasing hearing negative things about their aftercare, customer service seems to have dropped.
I thought JL used to be the gold standard of customer service but I've heard quite a few examples in the past 2 years that suggest it's not the same as it used to be.

BertieBotts · 28/05/2021 10:35

For 15% I'd go with amazon, that's a big difference.

If the difference was smaller then high street makes more sense for ease of returns, questions, repairs etc.

Amazon repaired our TV free of charge though when it was 6 months out of warranty.

callmemaybee · 28/05/2021 12:27

Hi everyone- thanks for your thoughts.

So I ended up going with JL. The item isn’t that expensive (AirPods Pro) so the 15% wasn’t too much - I have had issues with my old AirPods so probably would rely on the second year warranty! Also I’ll receive them today with JL vs Monday with Amazon.

Having said that, I do think Amazon would still provide great customer service if anything happened outside of the warranty period.
