Best bird seed

What’s your best bird seed? I’ve just got a multi hanger bird feeder. Birds enjoy the fat balls but don’t seem bothered about peanuts. I’m looking at getting more bird seed, the mixed kind, but reviews are all very varied.

CJ Wildfood are good and will deliver big bags.

No grey squirrels here due to culling to support reds.

Peanuts are busy with woodpeckers, parakeets, sparrows and assorted tits.

Black sunflower popular with sparrows, greenfinches, and the feral and woodpigeons that hang about.

Cheap peanuts not always tested for alfatoxins and cheap seed has a lot of wheat and other grains low in nutritional value and mainly hoovered by pigeons. Only put fat out in cold weather as can cause problems with plumage etc when melty.

I have mixed seed in two feeders and its predominantly demolished by sparrows and a couple of blackbirds. I occasionally see a robin and blue tit but they don't seem to feed on the feeders. I can't put down a tray or flat feeder for them as have some very fat pigeons that keep stalking my garden and would hoover up anything they didn't have to work for! Had a few starlings a couple of weeks ago and they chased off the smaller birds. None of 'my' birds seem to like the fat balls Sad. Would love to see more of the little birds - I'm sure there are some chaffinches around too!

Flutter butter pods are good for little birds. I hang them in trees. Takes a few weeks for the birds to notice them but then they can’t stay away. Bigger birds don’t touch them

Flutter butter pods look interesting

The only downside is that it’s harder to watch the birds feeding when they’re hidden in bushes and trees. But probably nicer and less stressful for the birds.

So I bought the sunflower hearts. Still only get pigeons and magpies. Oh well.

I bought a niger seed feeder and seeds for the goldfinches we already have and they've not touched it [cry]

Oh no! I’m so jealous of people who have a variety of birds. I was getting one blue tit for a while but it’s stopped coming. Guess a cat must have got it.

Not only do they steal the bird food, they dig up my pots!

Ohhh, that must be what happened to my Dianthus.

I have squirrel proof feeders now, so no longer spend a fortune feeding them.
