US less vegetarian-friendly than UK?

Comparing menus at common fast food restaurants that are in both the US and UK (like McDonalds, Subway etc.) it seems the UK consistently has a larger number of vegetarian options or healthier meat (chicken/fish instead of beef/pork) options than the US. Given the diversity of the US population, especially in big cities like NYC and LA, I find it really surprising. The US certainly has more money so why not introduce more veg-friendly options on top of the usual hamburgers and hot dogs? Why is the UK "ahead" in this regard?

That is quite funny as Scot.
I do find plain sandwiches quite hard to find, I hate celery, it is one of few things I don't eat and tuna normally gets mixed with it.
I also don't like cheese and meat added together!

There is plenty about the USA I like but sandwiches, no.
I did see the dunkin toast the other day!

Why would anyone go to the US for a holiday and eat at McDonalds?

There are hundreds of thousands of Mexican restaurants, Italian, Chinese, 'fusion' even in the smallest of towns in the boonies, and decent options in food courts, malls, and other unlikely places. I took a cousin of mine for a vegan meal in a midwestern discount mall two years ago.

You can always ask for substitutions if your menu isn't veggie friendly. Beans instead of meat, "hold the cheese please"....

I suspect that’s pretty clustered in the US, being much more in coastal cities.

Ehem - can I just give a mention to Chicago, a big, bustling, multi-ethnic metropolis full of great restaurants and all you could hope and wish for in terms of universities, music of all stripes, theatres, art, museums...

There are a lot of vegan eating options in Chicago.

If you find yourself in central Chicago there is a fantastic food hall - the Revival Foodhall - which has a house range of different styles of food and many vegetarian and vegan options.
