Are potatoes annoying?

I'm low carbing due to being pre diabetic and needing to lose weight.

I've never been keen on potatoes, but meals are so much easier to prepare when no potatoes are involved. Protein and vegetables or salad and there you are, meal ready.

They're a faff to prepare, you have to decide what to do with them, they take ages to cook, they fall on the floor and roll away and they don't have a lot of taste. I find them needy and attention seeking.

Anybody else of this opinion?

(disclaimer: lighthearted thread, I'm not knocking potato eaters.)

Ate chips in a restaurant today. Wouldn't dream of cooking chips. There again can't imagine eating ever again right now after fish chips n mushy peas for lunch.

YABVVVU. There is nothing as versatile as a potato and actually they're not too high in calories, if you don't deep-fry them. They're also surprisingly nutritious, unlike bread or pasta.

Back in the day everyone had a chip pan. Usually full of oil with bits in. They were always catching fire.

Potatoes are dangerous! 😆

Chip pans are dangerous! Not the spuds.

Although saying that, a microwaved jacket potato is usually hotter than the sun so could present quite a danger to your oral health...

RaininSummer · 18/05/2021 16:48

I agree. Not a potato fan unless it's spicy wedges.

Vursayles · 18/05/2021 16:56

YABU. Potatoes are wonderful in so many ways. I actually see them as my little starchy friends. Always there in times of cooking need.

Potatoes were first cultivated in the Americas.
Seeing as my family is from northern Mexico, you would think that we'd eat potatoes more often than we do but I didn't grow up eating them. Sure, they were "in" food to bulk up ground beef for tacos, small diced and fried with chorizo for burritos, they'll appear in some stews but apart from "papas fritas", fried potatoes like chips/fries they wouldn't be eaten straight up. Corn, beans and rice on the other hand...

My husband is English and my kids take after him and the three of them can polish off 5lbs of potatoes in one sitting. I will eat them from time to time but I just don't get the love of them the way my English family do. And they always want those bastards every which way too. It's a pain in the ass.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 18/05/2021 17:30

Potatoes are a vehicle for other flavours really though, aren't they. Dauphinoise, new potatoes roasted in garlic and rosemary, roast potatoes dusted in roast potato seasoning, dirty fries, horseradish mashed potatoes, god I love potatoes.

TonTonMacoute · 18/05/2021 17:47

Prize for best ever thread title, but wrong, wrong, wrong.

I love spuds, cooked every which way, and this is the main reason I could never do low carbing.

Freshly dug up new potatoes simply steamed or boiled and slathered in butter 😋

bellropes · 18/05/2021 18:23

Dh sneaks potatos into everything. He does stuff in the slow cooker and puts little cubes of potato in. Potato by stealth. It's not on.

The ones that say "the proof is in the pudding" certainly are 😒

Nordstrom · 18/05/2021 18:52

My local pizzeria do a pizza with rosemary potatoes on. It's heavenly.

Dilbertian · 18/05/2021 18:53

YABU! I'm also low carbing, and the carb I miss most of all, more than bread or chocolate, is potatoes. I luuuuuurve potatoes.

But it takes all sorts - I forgive you Wink

BillywigSting · 18/05/2021 18:56

Yabu potatoes are quite possibly the best import from the americas ever.

I put them above both chocolate and avocados. Which are probably my second and third favourite foods after the humble spud (with an honorable mention to corn)

PetuniaPot · 18/05/2021 19:05

Now quinoa is annoying.

FadedRed · 18/05/2021 19:22

Jersey Royals.
Just saying’ ...

Mysterian · 18/05/2021 19:25

Potatoes rock!

You Go Potatoes!!!

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 18/05/2021 19:36

Potatoes are great for us gluten-free dieters so they are not annoying to me, but I can see your viewpoint might be a help when low carbing.

ComDummings · 18/05/2021 19:37

Potatoes are life 🥔

queenofthenorthwest · 18/05/2021 19:37

Potato dauphinois though Grin

Heartbeats0708 · 18/05/2021 19:42

I'm with @ragged I couldn't be without potatoes, but bread I can take or leave.
I'm a lazy potato cook though. Aldi/Lidl do pre-prepped potato things in little vacuum packs. The dauphinoise and baby potatoes in herb butter are the best!

Cindy87 · 18/05/2021 19:53

YABU they are worth every single second of prep!

Crankley · 18/05/2021 20:25

Potatoes are miraculous and can be cooked in so many different ways. Pasta and rice are tasteless lumps which I consider inedible.
