What do I want for my 50th birthday?

I'm in denial about it all and also suffering from social anxiety after the pandemic and just generally feeling quite tearful and tired.

I can't think of anything I'd like for my birthday. Please cheer me up by suggesting things I might like, or by telling me what your favourite presents were for your 50th - or another big birthday, if you haven't got there yet!

Would you prefer an experience to a gift such as a weekend break?

colouringindoors · 13/05/2021 21:55

I'm thinking of a necklace of three interlocking rings symbolising me and my dcs. Have spent time on etsy which is nice Smile. And a print by an artist I like.

Finfintytint · 13/05/2021 21:55

Well, for my fortieth I got some jewellery, a puppy and a trip to India. Didn’t want or need any of them but they were nice to have. Now 54 and a custom made cake was my 50th present. Very nice and designed by my now deceased mum.

I've just had my 50th, and treated myself to a new vegetable garden and some cheek fillers...

tenlittlecygnets · 13/05/2021 21:58

I think I'd like an experience. The house is full of stuff! Actually, I'd like someone to cook every day for a year and to clean the house 😁

A veg garden and cheek fillers! Quite different gifts!

I want to go on holiday. I'd love to jump on Eurostar and go to the south of France or Spain, but not at the moment.

A trip? Something you've always wanted to do (hobby/ learn to do something)? Are you a jewellery person? Photo shoot?

For me, I don't have any interest in things but would love experience type presents.

Numbersarefun · 13/05/2021 22:05

I’ve just been given a paddle board!

mineofuselessinformation · 13/05/2021 22:05

I'm divorced, so treated myself to a fabulous bright red sporty car! I still have it and still love it. Smile

My DW is talking of buying me a balloon flight - she did one in her teens. It will be a first for me.

tenlittlecygnets · 13/05/2021 22:15

I hate heights, so no balloons for me.

Bought a car in lockdown so better not get another one. Great ideas - keep them coming!

I got given a couple of experiences, a 'medieval" banquet experience which I was sniffy about but was great fun, and a red letter voucher I bought a cookery lesson with- knife skills - which changed the way I
chop.
I had a very informal party, people from all parts of my life, which I really enjoyed.

Holothane · 13/05/2021 22:47

Whycantisleeptonight · 14/05/2021 00:00

For my 40th I got a hardback lovely edition of one of my favourite books, a beautiful tree for my garden and fabulous afternoon tea at the Savoy. Lovely gifts! Cake BrewSmile

BadLad · 14/05/2021 00:09

Do you drink alcohol?

EmmaStone · 14/05/2021 08:24

For my 40th, I had a big lunch with lots of my female friends at the local posh hotel, they all chipped in to buy me a necklace from Tiffany's that I'd had my eye on. I wear it every day.

I have quite a few friends that have created 50th bucket lists - 50 things to do in their 50th year. Some can be quite ordinary (eg watch a particular film they'd never seen), to quite big ticket (eg climb a specific mountain). I think it's quite a nice idea to spread the celebration, and share lots of fun experiences with different people. Also, given this year, quite nice to have a structured plan of things to do (am I the only one who's forgotten how to plan events??).

EmmaStone · 14/05/2021 08:24

Oh, and I'd quite like a piece or original artwork for my 50th...

A weekend doing a course that involves staying on site and lots of lovely food. Eg cooking, yoga, photography

A bottle of expensive plonk. Eg Kruger champagne. Something you’d never buy yourself

PermanentTemporary · 14/05/2021 08:36

I invited people to a picnic at my favourite walking spot. Then I booked a hotel and we had dinner there.

My lovely friends brought loads of champagne and cake making the picnic a huge fun event. I assumed nobody would really want to spend a fortune on staying at the hotel so thought that would only be a few people - loads stayed and we had a great time.

I don't remember my presents! I bought myself a lino cut from a local artist I love though.

Damnloginpopup · 14/05/2021 08:37

I'm intending to visit Ndola, Zambia on my fiftieth birthday. It'll be fifty years to the day since I first went there. We left when I was ten weeks old and none of us have been back.

Fortieth I jumped out of an aircraft and made my takeoff:landing ratio uneven 😁

bigfloweryblouse · 14/05/2021 08:38

I asked for a record player and am now compiling a collection of vinyl albums from EBay Smile
