Does this look like chicken pox?

It developed 24hrs after DS was in a hot tub.
Nurse practitioner has said probably an allergic reaction (via photos and phone consult) but I'm not convinced

They look like satellite spots of something bacterial or fungal. The hot tub is the key in the history.

catinboots123 · 11/05/2021 14:56

Yeah I'm thinking hot tub folliculitis after a quick google. The nurse prescribed a bath emollient and a lotion, but I thing they are more for soothing than anything else?

Could antibiotics be needed?

If folliculitis then abx will be needed. Either topical or oral.

I’d get him reviewed again at the GP tomorrow. Or urgent care/OOH if he’s unwell tonight.

I’d say hot tub rash-my 3 had it recently after all being in the same hot tub. They’d all had chicken pox previously so knew it was unlikely to be that, especially all having the rash at the same time. We didn’t need to do anything-I think they had piriton as they were itchy and gradually the rash faded over a week or so. Put us all off hot tubs now!

Northernsoullover · 11/05/2021 18:40

@dementedpixie

Folliculitus can be caused by using a hot tub btw
I was going to say folliculitis.
Vanillaradio · 11/05/2021 19:08

Ds used to get papular/follicular ezcema during a bad flare up and it looked pretty much like that- people often thought he had chicken pox. I would say he will probably need at least antibiotic cream to clear it. Also recommend Dermol 600 in the bath rather than anything else as it is antimicrobial so can help to clear infection.

catinboots123 · 11/05/2021 22:35

Thank you everyone

@Vanillaradio yes it's Dermol 500 and 600 he has been prescribed.

The rash still looks very angry tonight. Am going to ring the GP first thing and push for an appointment to see if abs are needed

It looks like Folliculitis to me. Very common getting it from hot tubs and swimming pools. See you GP and get some cream for them.

Ormally · 11/05/2021 22:41

Also had this in 10 year old, appeared about 3 days after use of a hot tub. It wasn't chickenpox and took about 5 days to go.

Was only on the back and hips.

Look up hot tub rash and compare. It apparently is worst on areas covered by a swim suit. Spots were very red and angry along seam areas.

LizJamIsFab · 11/05/2021 22:42

Looks like chicken pox to me

MrsS92 · 11/05/2021 22:55

Looks like hot tub rash to me, my sister had something similar, and had to have an antibiotic prescribed.
My girls have never had chicken pox but from experience working with children in nursery they tend to look quite watery/blisters.

Looks like a staph infection
Need antibiotics and some fucidic acid cream to put on them if it is

Honeypickle · 12/05/2021 07:26

I’ve had this from a new hot tub when we hadn’t got the chemical balance quite right. I needed antibiotics and cream from the drs. However that was 4 years ago, and I’ve never had the rash again now the water is correctly balanced.

EarringsandLipstick · 12/05/2021 07:39

With your latest photo it doesn't look like chicken pox, but does look pretty dreadful & that abx needed.

999Alex · 12/05/2021 07:44

It looks more like chicken pox when the spots have burst and are about to crust over. If it's not itchy and doesn't seem to have bothered him I'm not convinced that it is therefore chicken pox. Def insist he is seen at doctors.

catinboots123 · 12/05/2021 10:15

Just spoken with the GP. She said CP is a possibility but she would normally expect it on his face and scalp so agreed it could be folliculitis! She has prescribed ABs - just off to pick them up now and get the poor little sod started on them.

Thank you all again for all your help and advice
