@Mistressinthetulips

Chattanooga you clearly have no knowledge of this case if you think that "keeping her head down" and serving this, additional, year will mean Nazanin returns home at the end of it.
People asking what proof is there that she is guilty need to provide the proof that she is innocent! Which of cause they can’t as no one on here knows the truth.

The Iranian government have evidence that she committed a crime or crimes and yes we can all say that the punishment is too severe for the crime but Iran is not known for their leniency.

Trying to get her let off and set her free seems to anger them more which is why I suspect they dig deeper and found out about the demonstration she had been on and they added another year to her punishment.

Britain owes the money.

There's nothing in the news, OP. Are you talking about news on social media without a link to a proper news organisation?

Mistressinthetulips · 02/05/2021 23:35

Is Iran known for ensuring the accused get a fair trial? That charges are not made for spurious reasons?
I don't just disagree with the sentencing in this (and other cases), but with the conviction itself.

CombatBarbie · 02/05/2021 23:38

I think people need to stop reading between the lines, the UK owes Tehran that money for failed contracts, just like most of the other international(mainly far east)hostage situations. It's a public way to try and force either the military equipment that's been promised and paid for or return the monies aka the ransom request.

underneaththeash · 02/05/2021 23:49

@CombatBarbie are you mad?
Women in Iran had a fundamentalist form of islam forced on them - which our government (obviously) didn't support.

CombatBarbie · 03/05/2021 08:48

Nope not mad..... Tehran, Saudi etc all follow cultures that we westerners do not agree with. The money isn't a hostage deal, the whole story is propaganda into making us believe the UK has paid 400m for one person's life. No we have repaid a debt owed. Glorified dirty business transaction.

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 03/05/2021 09:39

It has been in the public domain, but clearly not common knowledge Hmm, that the UK has been in Teheran's debt to the tune of £400m since the 70s. Nazanin's predicament can not be considered without factoring in this context as a major driver of the way the Iranian regime has chosen to conduct itself.

And can we please stop referring to Nazanin, or any other women in the public gaze, as "this lady". It's like you're addressing a 3-year old: "Ooo, wasn't that a nice lady!"

MadameMinimes · 03/05/2021 10:28

Since when have people needed to provide proof of innocence? That is bonkers.
Besides which, even if we don’t, the British government will know if she’s innocent. She was convicted on the basis that she was effectively training dissidents under the guise of teaching Persian journalism and that the operation was directed and funded by the British intelligence services. The government will know full well whether she was working for the intelligence services or not.

tecatea · 03/05/2021 10:33

It’s not about not having compassion it’s about someone breaking the laws of another country and no matter how awful those laws are and how terrible and over the top the punishment is the fact is she is being punished under those laws just as someone from another country comes here and breaks our laws and we punish them.

You have no idea what you are talking about. God it's depressing that people spout rubbish when they haven't even read anything about the case.

tecatea · 03/05/2021 10:34
