Fucking tonsilitis (I think)

I'm on Day 5 of what I assume is tonsilitis. Started with a sore throat, then the next day my tonsils swelled right up, covered in gunky phlegm like goop. Swallowing is agony. Eating is avoided and timed when the paracetemol/ibuprofen is at peak coverage. Painkillers only just seem to make the pain manageable, but only for an hour/90 mins at a time.

Can't ring the GP til Tuesday obviously - and they would presumably only give me ABs if it's a bacterial infection, rather than viral which is much more common. Dr Google suggests symptoms go away in 4-10 days. I'm on Day 5 and in my irrational pained state I'm rather put out that a 33 year old supposedly in her prime doesn't seem to have turned the corner with this yet.

The one hobby I seem to have developed through the pandemic - eating - has been ruined! Grin

I've got a benzo throat spray, tried salt water a few times but not sure how much it's helped or if I've got the ratios right, and picked up ice cream but only realised afterwards that it's vegan. Is it the fact it's cold that soothes the throat or is it the dairy?

If you have any other tips I'd be very grateful Sad Or just cheer me up as I'm feeling very very sorry for myself today!

I have just recently had tonsillitis and yes it kills and seems to be worst at night. Doctor prescribed me antibiotics and a spray and told me to gargle in salt water and to prop myself up at night. Bit strange but I found eating soft bread helped once the antibiotics kicked in which was around 2 days. Sweet food made it worse so stuck to savoury on plus side list a bit of weight.

I had what I thought was tonsillitis but it just got worse and worse - to the point that I couldn't swallow as too painful and I couldn't speak.
It was Quincy - had never heard of it before- needed high grade antibiotics

If you have someone who can get to a pharmacy tonight I'd really recommend Tyrozets(or Boots own brand version)to help you until the anti biotics kick in.

Thanks @InDubiousBattle, as it's Sunday everywhere has now closed. DM has offered to go somewhere further afield as she drives and I don't but I seem to be managing ok now with painkillers and salt water. Even swallowing isn't too painful this evening.

Google says that Tyrozets was discontinued because people were overusing the antibiotic in it?

@MumofSpud my friend has been nagging me to go to the doctor as soon as I mentioned tonsilitis as he's had it a few times but really badly (including Quincy!). Both times I've had it it's really been nothing, so I fobbed him off saying it'll go away on it's own while he carried on nagging. Now he's full of 'I told you so' so he'll be insufferable for a while Grin

The glandular fever thing seems accurate. Same symptoms as I have, plus 'tonsilitis that doesn't go away'. Only thing I don't have is tiredness, so I'm sure the ABs will work their magic. Thanks so much for all your help, I wouldn't have called OOH today if I hadn't posted Smile

If pain continues add some codiene into the pain relief mix, and difflam is a godsend
Glad you called ooh, last time I tried to man through tonsillitis without abx I ended up in hospital with sepsis
Feel better soon

I find warm drinks better than cold, and almost constant, don't let your throat get dry
Ready salted crisps are incredibly painful but they scratch the gunk off and the salt helps
