Derek Chauvin - the Aftermath

I know there have been multiple threads on this topic already, but I was wondering what will happen next.

Do you think in similar previous cases where police have killed unarmed citizens and had charges dropped or dismissed, that this will open up fresh investigations?

I'm thinking of Tony Timpa and Daniel Shaver, but admittedly there are tons of cases where the police have been caught on camera and you can't really defend their actions. Will Derek Chauvins trial have a knock on effect of some of these cases?

I thought he was cleared of that?

TeaAddict235 · 23/04/2021 19:41

@Shelddd

Racism is not the main problem, white people in usa are killed at same rate by police officers as black people are (when looking at number of police interactions which is the correct metric).

Not saying racism isn't an issue but racism in usa and uk is probably somewhat equal... Yet you don't have anywhere near the amount of problems in uk that you do in usa.

They hooked you up with the Internet in prison already Chauvin?

Gotta clean your name eh?

@roussette have you got a link?

Snap!

FrippEnos · 23/04/2021 22:01

@VeniVidiWeeWee

What happens if he appeals?

And wins?

I don't think that he could win an appeal against this.

However, I do think that it is possible for his defence to argue that the sentencing has a political bias due to the stupidity of the politicians that have weighed in on this including biden.

Roussette · 24/04/2021 07:53

Biden said nothing until the jury was sequestered so it had no effect whatsoever on the verdict.

EvilOnion · 24/04/2021 08:02

@Roussette if he receives above the recommendations it could be argued that he's being made an example of because the Vice and President both weighed in publicly before it was handed down.

My concern is that he'll appeal and reduce to minimum recs with a concurrent sentence which would be a joke.

Roussette · 24/04/2021 08:11

I get your point. I don't know enough about how it works.

SueSaid · 24/04/2021 08:21

'I'm thinking of Tony Timpa and Daniel Shaver'

I hope so. I cannot believe the police weren't prosecuted for Timpa's death and I believe even kept their jobs.

Police brutality and their use of restraint in the US needs addressing urgently, let's hope things change.

EvilPea · 24/04/2021 08:21

Didn’t he pull his gun on two under 18’s who had fired a nerf gun out their window?

artquejtion · 24/04/2021 08:22

Just saw a recent video of a police officer repeatedly thumping a female suspect in the head, she was on the ground and I think already cuffed, the two police officers with him, intervened and pulled him off her.

So I think it already is having an impact on police officers, who are now not prepared to be implicated with thug cops.

artquejtion · 24/04/2021 08:29

@TheresAnEyeInMeSoup

I think as Gerbil said, if he appeals and wins there will be a backlash.

But the footage shows everything, I dont know how he could possibly win an appeal when the evidence speaks for itself. What is the point of officers wearing body cams if that footage would just be disregarded?

If he wins an appeal, it will be on legal technical grounds, not because there is any doubt that he murdered George Floyd.

Sadly, although I don't know how it works in the US, I think the defence will have plenty of technical issues to appeal on, i.e. the compensation paid to the family prior to the case even starting, several prominent public figures, including the President, condemning him as guilty prior to the jury finding him guilty.

I hope it doesn't happen, and I hope they don't allow him out on bail while the appeal is in process.

TheresAnEyeInMeSoup · 24/04/2021 09:28

All of it is awful. Thumping a women when she is already restrained, crushing peoples peoples necks and backs til they die. It's more like a fascist state. Boils my blood. Daniel Shavers wife is still appealing for justice. She wrote a song with her very young daughter and it absolutely breaks my heart 😭
Tony Timpa's death was unnecessary, he needed help clearly. When they were killing him they were laughing and joking about waking him up for school 🤬 and they thought he was snoring but it was vaginal breathing. I don't know how they got him that state and didn't think to start administering CPR asap. That probably would have saved his life if they weren't such thick twats.

Omg, AGONAL breathing!! Why no edit button? Ffs.

Nut it could be argued that it had an effect on the sentencing.

Which is what I posted.

Ok, yes. Smile

Not saying racism isn't an issue but racism in usa and uk is probably somewhat equal... Yet you don't have anywhere near the amount of problems in uk that you do in usa.

Where are you getting your information from?

According to mappingpoliceviolence.org/ police killed black people at higher rates than white people in 47 of the 50 largest cities in the US

Shelddd · 25/04/2021 06:47

Black people have higher touch point with cops than white people do so you can't compare percentage of population. You have to look at how many police interactions.

Regardless i wasn't claiming that there is no racism in usa... Just statistically black people are not killed at higher rate than white people by police. That's a fact.

Also not claiming there is no problem with police brutality in usa.

Also not claiming chauvin is innocent.

... Just saying this particular incident should really be about police brutality in usa rather than race.

It's only about race because that's the current hot topic.

Now you can cry all you want and call me a racist and make other emotional attacks because you can't attack my logic. That's fine, whatever makes you feel better.

KatherineJaneway · 25/04/2021 06:50

He'll appeal and the process will drag on for years. He'll get out early, whatever his sentence.
