How do you pronounce cutlery?

I've heard a lot of people pronounce it cut-ul-ry but I'm sure it should be cut-l-ry with the 'l' sounding like how you would start Laura/look/lolly.

I'm doing a crossword and it's one of the answers Smile

Cut leh ree

But my husband says cuttle ree, and it makes me want to divorce him.

saraclara · 16/04/2021 16:52

CUT-luh-ry

BAT-uh-ry, but the uh bit is very quick compared to the uh bit in cutlery. So it's definitely not BATT-ry, but it's only barely BAT-uh-ry

My old nan, Croydon born and bred but lived in Yorkshire for longer than I've been alive, says 'chimley' and it makes my teeth itch.

Cut ul ree is just wrong. I have heard it; but it doesn't make sense for the letters to be read in that way. Cut ler ee is the one and only way to say it.

@GillBungalow

Cut leh ree

But my husband says cuttle ree, and it makes me want to divorce him.

Same here. I really have to grit my teeth!

It’s ‘cluttery’ in our house. No idea why, it just always has been.

PrelovedWithValue · 16/04/2021 18:27

Cut-luh-ry
Batt-uh-ry

What about chutney? I say chut-nee, but I have just been watching a YouTube video where the person said 'chuh-te-nee'

Hands up, I say cut-el-ree and I think a lot of people in my area do aswell! However I’m also from an area that’s says ay and day as well! As in “I day do that instead if I didn’t do that” and “I ay telling you instead of I’m not telling you”

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 16/04/2021 18:48

I say BATT-uh-Ree
A lot of people I know say it more like Batch-ry almost
