Can plus size women wear bikinis?

I am a plus size woman. I am a size 18 to 20. I am working at reducing this but its not happening over night. I am 5 ft 4 and I carry all my weight in my belly. I have a big belly. It is divided into two parts and I have a muffin top too.

I have two sets of swim gear:

  1. a swimdress
  2. a tankini and shorts

I will be honest I hate all of the material, especially when it's wet. There's just so much of it. I don't usually go to the beach but sometimes in the summer I might go to the beach and I hate wet togs and sand. Sand gets everywhere.

I'm thinking maybe a bikini might be the answer because there will be less material. It would mean more than likely the top part of my belly being on display. Would this be a big no no?

Do you mean do people sell them? Yes.

If you're comfortable wearing a bikini then just wear one irrespective of size.

I can't imagine a scenario where I'd ever be comfortable in a bikini, but that was as true when I was fit and lean as a teenager as it is now I wobble as a middle aged woman. Size isn't important, your own comfort is presuming it meets the decency standards for where you're planning to wear it, no point in being arrested for the sake of swimwear

Cam2020 · 11/04/2021 18:37

Wear what you like and feel comfortable in and have fun.

JudgeRindersMinder · 11/04/2021 18:37

I’m a lot more plus sized than you and I always wear a bikini on holiday. It’s not skimpy, I prefer the bottoms to come to my waist but it’s very much a bikini

NiceNaughtyAndSorry · 11/04/2021 18:37

If you feel comfortable in it, you can wear anything. The only thing is to not think about what others will think.

dubyalass · 11/04/2021 18:37

Absolutely they can! As can women of any size or age or boob size or whatever. Go for it, OP. You will look great. Give it some swagger.

KarensChoppyBob · 11/04/2021 18:38

Not overweight but I am pale. So I say fuck
you to self-tan too. If I catch the sun naturally then fair enough ...☀️

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 11/04/2021 18:41

Agree with above poster. Ive got ginger hair and ive had people (actual strangers) say they need sun glasses to be around me when im in a bikini because my skins too white. I still wear a bikini.

If you're comfortable to wear a bikiki, defo wear one.

I'm 5ft nothing and a size 14. Last summer I was a 16. I wore a bikini on the beach and I felt fab. I mean Im not gonna win any beauty pageants but I felt comfortable and kinda empowered, like screw all those people who think only skinny folk should wear bikinis.
I'm going to buy a new one this summer and wear it proudly!!

Yes. Plus sized women can wear bikinis. Wear what you want!!

WhySoSensitive · 11/04/2021 18:50

Go naked if you want. Wear whatever the hell you want and whatever you feel most comfortable in.

Amdone123 · 11/04/2021 18:53

@Letsallscreamatthesistene, some people are so bloody rude 🤬

Pleaseaddcaffine · 11/04/2021 18:56

I wear a bikini with my toddler as getting changed while watching him in full swimwear is an arse

Agreed.

aprilanne · 11/04/2021 19:04

I always think a bikini is not about size but attitude
Personally I am heavy but would still not have wore one even when young and size 10
I always felt exposed
But if you feel good then why the hell not
Confidence is everything

SpongeCakeAddict · 11/04/2021 19:07

Please, wear the bikini. I'm your height and am a 22-24, very slowly managing to work on it because I'm not mobile. I've worn a bikini as a size 18, and I have some for my current size. Please wear it, help to normalise it. Bodies are just bodies and the only one anyone should be concerned about is their own.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 11/04/2021 19:10

Yes, nothing more to add.

amusedbush · 11/04/2021 19:48

Absolutely - wear the bikini!

KindergartenKop · 11/04/2021 20:45

More material doesn't hide anything, it's just more uncomfortable to wear (in my opinion). Wear what you want!

Laiste · 11/04/2021 21:10

i was going to say the same as the above poster.

'Big' swimming costumes or ones which are like tennis dresses, and tankinis ect - they don't make you look slimmer, they just cover up 'skin'. If anything i think they make you stand out!

It's a bit like when someone on the beach is stood there wriggling about like an upright caterpillar trying to hide themselves behind a towel to change, vs the person who sat down and got on with whipping their undies off and putting their cozie on. Which one have you noticed more often?

We tend to look more at the person trying to hide something. It's human nature.

Wear the bikini OP :)
