Can anyone help me with funeral songs for my Dad?

My Dad died unexpectedly last week. He didn't leave us any funeral instructions and I'm trying to get it right.

I need something that isn't particularly sad, he was quite a character and would've liked something a bit catchy.

He was a big fan of The Eagles, James Taylor, Eric Clapton and similar.

Would anyone with better knowledge than me be able to suggest something? I only know the mainstream songs.

'Great Gig in the Sky', Pink Floyd.

Not suited for everyone, but we had "Keg on my coffin" for my brother. Was perfect on the day.

I'm sorry for your loss. If you really want to add dark humour then Hotel California, Google the lyrics first.

From the artists you mention I get the feeling your dad is fairly youngish, take care of yourself xxx

Fire and rain by James Taylor
Knocking on Heaven’s Door by Eric Clapton

MoiraNotRuby · 10/04/2021 18:12

He might also be of the era of enjoying Spirit in the sky. X

Johnny Cash version of We’ll Meet Again?

Someone else mentioned ‘Days’ - there is a great acoustic and choral version by Ray Davies that would work well if you wanted a different feel to the Kirsty Macoll version.

Old '55 by The Eagles, lovely song

TheSandman · 10/04/2021 20:58

I know this may seem a bit insensitive but I have told my wife I want 'Go West' by Pet Shop Boys played at mine. The term 'go west' being a euphemism for dying and the lyrics being wonderfully optimistic, upbeat, and hopeful.

Eagles I wish you peace
Jackson Browne’s For a Dancer
Eagles Part of me, part of you

For my mums funeral we had Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen as he was her favourite singer and a ditsy song that she used to sing to us when we were children.
Are there any songs that you remember him playing?

mathsmo · 10/04/2021 21:59

So sorry for your loss.

How about 'Love will keep us alive' by The Eagles? One of my favourites.

Chocobudbrownies · 10/04/2021 22:40

Tears in heaven- Eric Clapton

Cam2020 · 10/04/2021 22:50
Flowers

What about Let it Grow, Eric Clapton?

Hesma · 10/04/2021 22:53

Sorry for your loss OP. I find Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven” very moving. He wrote it after the loss of his young son x

Cowbells · 10/04/2021 23:09

DBro played Good Vibrations when SiL died. It was really moving but also upbeat - perfect for her as she was such an upbeat person.

James Taylor's Fire and Rain is incredibly moving but also very sad.

princessTiasmum · 10/04/2021 23:22

Stairway to heaven, sorry forgot who sings it

TheSandman · 10/04/2021 23:26

@princessTiasmum

Stairway to heaven, sorry forgot who sings it
!!!?

Led Zeppelin! (What are they teaching kids these days?)

BTW, OP, if you do decide on this track make sure you DON'T play the Rolf Harris version by mistake...

Days Kirsty McColl
Upbeat but poignant

Excitedforxmas · 10/04/2021 23:37

My friend had golden slumbers from the Beatles - it was beautiful

Clawdy · 11/04/2021 08:29

You've Got A Friend by either James Taylor or Carole King. Beautiful lyrics.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 11/04/2021 08:44

sorry for your loss

Let it grow by Eric Clapton is lovely imo

Tears in heaven is very sad

Podiki · 29/04/2021 21:37

Thank you so much for everyone's suggestions, I've just come back to this.

We went with Sweet baby James by James Taylor in the end. My Dad fancied himself as a but of a cowboy given his quirky dress sense, it seemed apt even though I know it was written about his nephew. I knew he loved the song

Dance with my father - Luther vandross

follygirl · 29/04/2021 21:41

I'm so sorry for your loss.
We had fairly sad songs at his funeral so can't help you but one of the things which gave me peace was that I wrote him a letter which was put in his coffin with them. His death was sudden so I hadn't said goodbye. It felt cathartic to say these words even after his death.
