Is this racist?

So local supermarket has multiple products in security tags / boxes. Large chain supermarket. According to the facebook thread I am reading it includes some alcohol, steak, salmon, ketchup, beauty products, razors and...

Ackee.

The entire thread is about it being racist to have a security tag on the Ackee (6 pounds, so more expensive than the salmon or some of the hair products).

Hair products with tags on are multicultural - some more for afro styles, some not.

Is having a security tag on the Ackee racist?

If it gets stolen more, the shop is only concerned with their profits so they'll tag it. That's it.

What do people want the shop to do? Leave them to get stolen? What do they think the shop is trying to do - tag it so that Caribbean people (It's Caribbean food) don't buy it or pinch it? Or that anyone who likes Ackee finds it harder to buy or not pinch the food? Is that your racist angle?

Other items are tagged accordingly.

What’s ackee?
Surely they tag the most expensive easiest to steal stuff.

Looks like this

Is this racist?

Lots of stuff gets stolen. They can’t tag everything.
I noticed once that there was an egg missing from a box in the supermarket. I’d just opened it to check if any were broken and a member of staff was standing near me so I just laughed and said that there was an egg missing.
She said that happens all the time. People take one egg and put it into their pocket.
I actually feel sad for someone who feels they need to steal one egg.

Thank you. I didn’t realise it came in a tin. I thought it was just a loose fruit thing. It’s expensive at £5.20 a tin. Coffee is tagged sometimes same sort of price.

Tlollj · 02/04/2021 17:25

I suppose they need to steal an egg. Just getting one over or because they can.

dementedpixie · 02/04/2021 17:25

Think it can be poisonous if not cooked first so it comes ready prepared in a tin

bonfireheart · 02/04/2021 17:51

If they boycott the store, then the store has two options
A) sell item without a tag and lose money when it's stolen
B) stop selling the item altogether

BothLeftAndRightAreDelusional · 02/04/2021 17:55

If a black person says it's racist, would that change your answers?

No but I'll accept it as that black person's answer, not all black people's answer, unless I ask every black person and get a unanimous vote.

It’s high value and non perishable in the tin I guess. My friend noticed once that all the cheese had tags on in her central London supermarket. I was in a leafy borough later and noticed that the Agave syrup was tagged so it might depend a bit on what the local demographic are likely to buy stolen I suppose...
